Sanford is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Sanford is bordered to the north by Lake Worth and to the east by Hollywood Park and Boca Raton. The first settler in Sanford arrived in 1827, when James Campbell and his family moved from Scotland to what is now Seminole County. In 1841, George A. Smith purchased of land at what is now corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Orange Avenue from John C. Calhoun for $500. The town began as a small cabin settlement called Gadsden Landing on the mouth of Lauderdale River near present-day Hollywood Park. It was renamed Sanford after General Lafayette's cavalry division headquarters during the American Revolution. In 1868, Sanford incorporated as a city under state law 4th Amendment act No 2 of that year which granted citizens "the right to bear arms." On November 3rd of that year, Revs Jno Pemberton (a Methodist) baptized George Washington Carver into Christianity at Trinity Episcopal Church on Liberty Street in Sanford with Rev Wm Hargrave officiating; it was one of two Baptisms for white settlers that day according to business records kept by then Mayor Isaac Myers. In 1870 Census results shows Davenport & Company grain Elevator; there were only three families living in town: Carver & Stephens ( flour miller), Beasley ( Planter) & wife Fannie Mae Beasley and Snively ( Butcher). By 1880 there were over 100 people living in town including six churches, ten stores/markets, eleven schools/universities and four homesickness hospitals run by Drs Whitehurst Family Homeopathic Hospital Mrs Cookseye Also post office established in this time
