In that year, Confederate forces invaded Florida and the company’s plant was taken over by Confederate forces. The company continued to produce munitions until 1865 when it merged with another company to form the United States Arms Manufacturing Corporation. The company continued to produce munitions until 1978 when it closed its doors due to economic conditions. During its time as an active producer of ammunition, Sanford made significant contributions to American firearms history.

The history of Sanford began as part of what is now Polk County when Captain John Sanford found land for his new township on November 6, 1853 from James Waddell and others who had abandoned their claims east of Tampa Bay due to Seminole Wars hostilities and Indian raids that lasted until1848. At the time ofCaptain John's donation 3/8 mile square section (now part of downtown) lay within present day Polk County limits along present US 27 between Belle Glade and Lakeland; this area now includes much of downtown Sanford including streets such as Magnolia AvenueEverett Street near Fort Myers Beach Boulevard north to US 19 south to US 192 east (the routing then followed today's US 27 / I-75 corridor). This gift allowed growth potential for what would become one of America’s most rural towns with only 2 businesses opening up within 1 year: Drury’s General Store on December 25th 1854 (still open today) and Ladd’s Sawmill & Lumber Emporium on January 17th 1865 which both closed shortly thereafter due to competition from larger lumberyards opening up throughout central Florida during this period…..Today there are still some farms remaining within city limits and several small business districts surrounding downtown…..The development process started slow but steadily grew over time developing cash crops such as cottonseed oil production (estimated at $50 per acre in 1912), feed milling production beginning around 1915 when electric light came into use (estimated at $1 per ton by 1918), brickmaking becoming available starting around 1925 following construction of a power plant adjacent to original Drury’s store building – making it America’s first municipally run brickyard…..During World War II local defense industries produced munitions such as cordite and phosphorous……..Today Downtown remains primarily residential with many stores still open although commercial areas have decreased significantly…. With an overall population size smaller than any other municipality in Polk County our economy depends heavily upon agriculture products like cottonseed oil production ($183 million worth sold last year), feed handling ($206 million worth sold last year), tourism ($207 million worth generated last year)….As one example we exported 466 thousand metric tons (+$39 million+ through imports) worth TAGS or Trade Allocated Goods related to Agriculture products last year……Sanford is also home to world renowned University Park which offers important educational opportunities for students both before university classes begin each semester residents attend classes located next door while also providing programming opportunities for professionals associated with various businesses across town…..The University Park campus covers 12 acres totaling 559 feet long by 129 feet wide sitting atop an 827 foot high hill……This makes it easily accessible via public transportation…A number of prominent residents have included Congressman Alcee Hastings; Mayor Harry Reid; Senior Vice President Joe Biden; Governor Rick Scott; actor Tom Hanks……………. One interesting tidbit about our little cornerof Florida history is that J.M. 'Jimmie' Sanford - father-in-law Of Mrs Bobby Sands - once played football coach at nearby Hillsborough State College
At the turn of the century, Sanford was a small town in Leon County. It became a major center for cotton production after the state legislature passed a law authorizing slavery in Florida. The town's white population grew rapidly during this time and by 1875, it had over 1,000 residents. The cotton industry faded in the late 1800s and Sanford experienced a decline in population. However, it regained some importance as an agricultural center during the Depression years. In 1948, Sanford absorbed neighboring Clearwater into its city limits.
