The town of Sanford was founded on November 12, 1835 by Major James A. Wilson as part of an effort to create a new government for Indian Territory after the Treaty of 33 years earlier had failed to win independence from Spain. It became official on December 3, 1835 when Florida statehood was granted to the United States. In 1861, Confederate General John Buell Battle fought his last battle at Fort Sumter before surrendering to Union forces; this event marked the end of the Civil War in Florida and set off a period known as Reconstruction throughout much of south Alabama and Mississippi. On December 12, 1865, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law legislation creating Polk County within Seminole County – named for George Washington Polk – as part of efforts towards racial reconciliation in southern America following the war. In 1900, Sanford's population reached 1,500 people and it began developing into a small town with three blocks wide streets and one block deep sidewalks developed along Main Street between US 192 (now US 4) and SR 734 (now SR 513). By 1915 there were only 100 people living in downtown Sanford while 600 more lived around rural areas northwest and east of town according to original approvals filed by developers who wanted streetcar lines running through their neighborhoods providing easy access for residents to shops and services located near city centers such as Tampa Bay Airport or Orlando International Airport

In 1965, construction began on Interstate 95 which connected Sanford with Eustis through piney woods to the south and Fort Myers to the north. This major highway soon became one of Seminole County's most important transportation arteries, helping fuel economic development within the city while also providing easy access to nearby beaches and tourist attractions
