Safety Harbor is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town of Safety Harbor was founded in 1892 by William H. Magee and his wife Martha.[2] Magee named it after nearby Saint Augustine, Florida because he believed that the town would be a safe haven for people fleeing Confederate raids in the area during the American Civil War. After Protection Bayou Bridge was completed in 1895 and connected to Stonington Bayou on the north side of Safety Harbor, many residents moved to Safety Harbor because they could get closer to commerce and services than they could from Stonington Bayou. By 1915, most of the original settlers had died or moved away, leaving only a handful of people remaining in Safety Harbor. A post office was established at Safety Harbor in 1916,[3] and until 1942 it used the name "Saint Augustine".[4] In 1942 safety harbor became part of Jacksonville when it merged with that city's eastern suburbs including Neptune Beach, Port Orange, Fort Walton Beach and Martin County. The merger created Jacksonville's third largest city with over 2 million inhabitants as well as its first major professional sports team (the Jaguars) which played their home games at EverBank Field from 1963 to 2002 before moving to Raymond James Stadium for their last two seasons before being relocated back to Jacksonville for 2019 season; this move also reunited EverBank Field with Veterans Memorial Stadium which served as both home plate umpire stand (1962-1964), clubhouse (1965-1968), press box (1969-1970), video room (1971-1972), batting cages (1973-1975), weight room and training fields adjacent thereto throughout its history). In 1994 Jupiter Broadcasting Company purchased all rights to EverBank Field from TheJacksonville Jaguars Organization who then sold those rights back to TheJacksonville Jaguars Organization Trust who operates them today[5][6][7]. The first stores opened around 1912 when John Fenton started selling groceries out of his house on First Street near present day Broadway Avenue[8]. By 1922 there were 5 grocery stores open along First Street with 3 more opening soon thereafter[9]: one operated by Mrs. Lillie Blyden; another by Joe Norris; one by Hilda Arrington; one by Mrs. Elmer Parkhurst; another by Jordon Whitehead who also ran a bakery next door on Second Street cornering First Street opposite Magic Kingdom Boulevard[10]; finally an ice cream parlor called Belle Isle opened up across First Street from Mrs. Arrington’s store on December 15th 1922 just days after Thanksgiving [11] In 1924 local builder Wm Ware built what is now known as “the old bank” consisting of 4 wooden buildings measuring 25 feet wide x 45 feet long x 10 feet high inside an asphalt parking lot owned by Mr Payne & Sons Incorporated who extended their business into downtown Jacksonville until 1951 when they withdrew due largely to inflation caused by World War II shortages[12][13][14]. On October 11th 1925 Main street between 2nd & 3rd Streets was renamed “Jupiter Boulevard” in honor of Mayor Geo Pritchett Jr., future 102nd Governor Of Florida In 1928 Jarvis Advertising Agency started advertising here which continued until 1984 when it merged with JCPenney Corporation becoming JCPenney plc meaning that advertising ceased forever except for select events like Christmas time where special Providence Productions adornments are displayed On July 8th 1929 Masonic Lodge No 1 Training School For Masons No 2 Orphanage For Wayward Boys #1 opened here under charter given them free use Of Hudson River boat launch dock And launching pond Which They used untill 1961 When It Became Govt Owned Property
