Safety Harbor, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County and home to the University of South Florida (USF). The population was 120,552 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on November 7, 1923 by banker and developer John Pritzker. It became a incorporated city on December 5, 1931. The name Safety Harbor comes from the sheltered harbor that flanked the original town site. In 1930 Pritzker donated land on which he built his first house. By 1933 Safety Harbor had attracted many businesses and residents because it was an unincorporated community with no official government or school services. A year later Pritzker donated land to build a public library and post office adjacent to his house. In 1941 safety hazards were identified as one of several reasons why shipbuilders in Fort Lauderdale were moving their plants out of state due to the war effort: "Lack of regulation [in] port area made it difficult for engineers to provide safe working conditions for sailors". In 1946 USF graduate Homer Coker started construction on what would become its first major building project; Coker's Gymnasium/Wellness Pavilion which still stands today. The pavilion became a popular tourist destination and also served as an event space for local high school dances and other functions until 1994 when it was closed after being damaged in a fire

Safety Harbor is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Safety Harbor was originally called Belle Glade. A post office was founded there on December 15, 1892 by J.C. Goodrich and named for Belle Glade, Alabama (then part of Florida). In 1903, it changed its name to Safety Harbor after being recommended by the US Coast Guard as a spot where people could take refuge from shipwrecks off the coast of Jacksonville. On May 25, 1898, General John Pershing visited the town and ordered all American forces stationed alongFlorida's west coast to leave their posts and enter into an agreement that would protect Safety Harbor from Spanish flu pandemic-carrying mosquitoes. In 1907, Edwin Halsey became sheriff of Monroe County and moved his county courthouse to Safety Harbor with his family in order to better serve the community. The first school in Safety Harbor opened on October 6th, 1909 under instruction from Mrs Anna Laddington Shriver who taught second grade until her death in 1959.
