At that time, Shoresline consisted only of Kirtland's house which was located at 1125 W State Road 128A (later renamed US-1). The first elections were held November 3rd, 1916; voters elected George Cramer (Democrat) Mayor and James Ahern (Republican) Councilmen. The Safety Harbor area was first settled in the early 1800s by the Seminole people. The area was named for the harbor at Pensacola, Florida which was a major trade center during this time. In 1821, Captain James K. Polk founded Fort Brooke on Safety Harbor beach and later renamed it Fort Pierce after his capital city of Jacksonville. This fort served as a military outpost for much of Florida’s history until it was destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1892,Safety Harbor became a town when it was annexed by Stonington, Connecticut. After two years of growth, Safety Harbor officially became a city on July 1, 1897. As a city, Safety Harbor became known for its many manufacturing companies such as American Can Co., General Electric Co., Singer Sewing Machine Co., and Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company. Today, many of these businesses still exist and operate in the safety harbor area today.
