This led to an era of rapid growth for Safety Harbor which coincided with New Deal-era optimism about postwar recovery. In 1948, when Hurricane Charley struck Florida, many residents decided to move away from coastal towns because they were afraid Category 5 hurricanes would come here again. However, more than 12 years later Hurricane Floyd caused extensive damage to Safety Harbour and many homes were lost or destroyed; nevertheless, tourism continued to grow at a rapid pace until severe storm conditions forced evacuation in 1999 during Tropical Storm Gloria. Since then local businesses have worked hard to rebuild using what little remained from before the storm hit: They've created new businesses such as restaurants and hotels near where people used to live; built bike paths along scenic riverfront walks; and installed large storage sheds on land vacated by sugarcane mills long ago. The town of Safety Harbor, Florida was founded in 1868 by Captain John A. Sloat and his family. The community grew rapidly and soon became a center for shipbuilding, fishing, and tourism. In 1935, the town was named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of a national program to promote coastal towns as tourist destinations. Safety Harbor prospered until the early 1990s when the local shipbuilding industry went out of business and the population decreased by almost half. Today, Safety Harbor is a small town with few residents and no commercial enterprises other than its two churches and one grocery store. The only source of income comes from tourism which has been declining since the late 1990s. Safety Harbor is located on Pensacola Bay about halfway between Tampa and Jacksonville; it is bordered to the north by Sanford, to the south by Port St Lucie, and to the west by Stonington Beach. The bay forms an important shipping artery that connects Key West to mainland Florida (via Okeechobee) and Miami Beach to Fort Myers Beach on Cuba (via Marco Island). The town was formed on marshland that had been used for hunting, fishing, farming,and trading before being developed into what is now known as Pensacola Township in 1868; it became Safety Harbor County in 1924. In 1935,Safety Harbor was designated as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program designed to promote coastal towns as tourist destinations throughout America; safety harbors were also established along many other coasts through this program including Boston (1935), Norfolk (1937), San Francisco (1939), New Orleans (1941), Anchorage (1945), Seattle (1947), Jacksonville (1950), Mobile Bayou City Limits No 4-A(1959)—all within municipal boundaries then considered part of Jackson County—and Baldwin County limited jurisdiction over Mobile Bayou City Limits No 1-B(1963). Captain John A Sloat founded Safety Harbor because he realized that there was no market for wooden ships built in America at that time; instead he built vessels made from welded metal using methods pioneered by Danish sailors during World War I. In 1934 Captain Sloat donated land at present day Marina Boulevard/Pensacola Beach so that people could build their own homes without fear of malaria or sharks; thisualaized what would become known as "the white zone." This area immediately east of Old Mrs McDonald's Store still contains some traces of Captain Sloat's construction efforts including structural remnants from three smokestacks remaining standing today near shoreline across from Naval Station Mayport according to reminiscences given by Mrs McDonald’s son Arnie MacDonald who lives adjacent thereto . In 1937 Captain Sloat donated another tract of land northeast of Marina Boulevard/Pensacola Beach which became known as "the black zone". Here people were not allowed to build homes without first getting government permission which often took months or even years because there was no zoning regulations in place at that time! This area still contains some evidence of Captain Sloat's construction efforts such as rusting old cannons found nearby etcetera.; however these are now accessible only via boat due To high water levels causedby Hurricane Andrew in 1992! As Shipbuilding began waning around world beginning in mid 90s local company went bankrupt & population decreased 2/3rd
