Safety Harbor, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by settlers in 1868 and named for Commodore John P. Safety Harbor, commander of the U.S. Navy's Squadron Vandalia during the Seminole Wars. The first post office was established in 1870 and remained open until 1978; it was then closed due to budget cuts by Monroe County government. Safety Harbor, Florida is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is a city in the Everglades National Park. The city was founded in 1892 by Captain George Hammond and was named after General Andrew Jackson's safety harbor on Lake Okeechobee. In 1907, Safety Harbor became part of Miami-Dade County. The population of Safety Harbor reached its peak in 1950 with over 60,000 residents. However, due to extensive development around the city and park, the population has decreased since then and currently stands at under 20,000 people. The first settlers to Safety Harbor were Captains George Hammond and John D'Alberto who arrived in 1892 from Cuba with their families. After landing they built a cabin on Cedar Key Island for themselves and their families until they could find land north of Safety Harbor which they did in 1799 when they purchased 5 acres (2 ha) of land from Jabez Dawson for $600. They began building a log cabin which became their home until it burned down in 1903 while they were out fishing. They replaced it with a more permanent structure which still stands today – the Hammond House – that was completed in 1904. It consisted of 2 stories with an attic, a basement and 3 rooms upstairs/ downstairs including one bedroom/bathroom combination that included 4 beds & 1 kitchenette equipped with table & chairs & stovetop ovens (& refrigerator). In 1907 Captain George Hammond donated 3 lots totaling 12 acres (5ha) adjacent to his home on Cedar Key Road NE for use as a public square or open space adjoining his house instead of being developed into housing like other towns along Miami’s beachfront areas during that time period because he believed that this would create more opportunities for education and economic development within townspeople rather than just becoming another resortk like Coral Gables or Fort Lauderdale where amenities such as gambling casinos had quickly become popular among visitors during those days especially given the low cost per visit compared to Havana or nightclubs at Playa del Carmen etc… He also believed that this would be less likely to besmirch Miami’s reputation as “the City Where All Things Are Possible” (Fowler v Fenton 977 So., No 8). Captain George Hammond donated these properties knowing full well how much money he would need to pay off his mortgage PLUS interest AND fees associated with purchasing them from Jabez Dawson so once these properties were dedicated as public space he knew there was no turning back! And so it came about that approximately half way through 1909 Development began on what would later become known as "Old Harbour" starting out with building President William McKinley Streetlights across 14th Avenue NW just east of Old Harbour between Biscayne Boulevard & I-595; followed byAdding Hudson’s Bay Company store - now called Macy’s - directly across from old harbourFrontage road widening access roads leading upslope next door; houses started popping up all around then including schoolhouses nearby until eventually condos (& now high rise buildings) appeared soon afterwards making SafetyHarbor one of The most rapidly gentrifying cities within Greater Miami area not only due to its strategic location but also because developers were willing & able TO pay FOR PUBLIC SQUARE!!!!!!

The town began to grow when a group of entrepreneurs founded the first white paper mill in Florida in 1821. In 1825, Safety Harbor became a chartered city and soon developed into one of the most dynamic ports in Florida. By 1850, Safety Harbor had become an important center for shipbuilding and commerce. The town was also home to one of Florida's first newspapers, The Jacksonville Gazette. The late 19th century saw intense growth at Safety Harbor as businesses expanded into new industries such as shipping and fishing. At its peak,Safety Harbor had over 60 businesses and 2,000 residents. However, during the 1920s and 1930s safety concerns led to several business closures and a decline in population until it reached its low point by the late 1940s. In recent years there has been renewed interest in safety issues at Safety Harbour which has helped resurgence its economy
