At that time, Safety Harbor was an unincorporated community located to the east of present-day Tampa Bay. The captain operated his range from his home on Third Avenue. The first real success at gun target shooting took place when Captain Wilkinson moved his range to what is now Fourth Street and Second Avenue in 1876. That location allowed him to offer better instruction and more opportunities for members of the public to shoot at targets using shotguns or pistols withMagazine capacity up to fifteen rounds per firearm. By 1880,Captain Wilkinson’s Range had become one of the most popular sites forgun targeting in Tampa Bay. Althoughinitially aimed at local law enforcement officers and military personnel, over time other segments of society beganto take advantage of Captain Wilkinson’srange too: citizens who wanted an opportunity to practice their marksmanship skills; businessmen who needed a reliable source for practicing during business hours; schoolchildren who enjoyed playing catch on occasion;and even animals such as dogs and cats who would be offered access tothe targets if they could get close enough! In1912 CaptainsWilkinson and George Shultz reopened their original range on FourthStreet adjacent to Stonington Beach Pier where they continued to operate until 1951 when they sold their propertyto developer Harry Seibert . Safety Harbor is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by English settlers in 1819 and named for Captain John R. Sherman, a U.S. Army officer who served in the Seminole War against the Seminoles and helped lead American forces to victory over them in 1818. A post office called Safety Harbor was established in 1826, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1889, a group of businessmen from Jacksonville bought 4 square miles (10 km2) of land north of Safety Harbor and began developing it as an industrial community known as "the Highlands." By 1901, there were 100 businesses located in Safety Harbor with a total payroll of $1 million; this number had grown to more than 1,000 by 1925. In 1929, General Motors purchased the assets of plants built by other companies during the early 1920s and reopened its plant here as GM's first manufacturing center outside of Detroit; throughout World War II it manufactured tanks, planes and other war products here. Thereafter Safety Harbor gradually lost its importance as an industrial center but continued to enjoy commercial growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of Jacksonville proper and its status as a bedroom community for people working in Jackson or surrounding counties. As recently as 2000-2001 Safety Harbour's population numbered just under 700 residents when Hurricane Charley destructive damage destroyed almost all roofs on most buildings leaving only frame walls standing which allowed access through windows for emergency crews who arrived after hours to clean up what little remained before returning home about sunrise daily without fear of water entering any building again that could have caused serious damage or possible loss/damage inside should repairs be required later on such things like replacement window glass etc...Such types things happen everyday now days because safety has become so laxened up since Katrina hit both coasts especially inland where development has gone on unchecked
