The town lies on both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway which separates South Florida from North Florida. According to the USGS, Safety Harbor's total area is 11 square miles (27 km2). The waterway forms its eastern border with Biscayne Bay while its western border is formed by Hard Rock Boulevard and U.S. 1 ( Interstate 95). According to legend, the first humans in Safety Harbor arrived when they landed on what is now Martin Island in September 1909 after sailing from Key West via the Everglades and Marathon River system (). Safety Harbor is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,495 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Monroe metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Safety Harbor were the Seminole Indians. A post office was established there on July 5, 1874, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 15, 1945. In 1865 an act of Congress created Monroe County from portions of Adams and Hardee counties. The towns of Mona Lisa (northwest corner) and New Smyrna Beach (southwest corner) were set off as a result of this law. On November 30, 1868 Stranahan & Son erected a wharf on the mouth of bayou Gainesville to serve as a landing point for shipping coming up the coast from Cuba or Haiti. This wharf served as the downtown commercial district for both Safety Harbor and New Smyrna Beach until after World War II when they all became incorporated into Jacksonville proper as separate municipalities with their own elected officials. As early as 1907Safety Harbour had been chosen by developers interested in building a new city just south ofJacksonville called Port Canaveral which would be world-renowned for its season-long white sand beaches and lucrative fishing grounds. However only two houses were built before money ran out and development stalled; one by developer J C McCloskey and one by Captain John W Moseley who developed Camp Corpestor which eventually became known as Buccaneers Cove due to its location near safety harbor’s first line of defense against marlin poaching! It wasn’t until 1915 when dredging began along the eastern shoreline that Port Canaveral could finally be realized! In 1922 construction started onwhat would become known as “Port Canaveral Landing” which would allow ships coming into Jacksonville to dock at Pelican Point instead of having to navigate around dangerous shoals off Beaches Road; originally it functioned exclusively as a military base during World War II but over time it has morphed into an important economic center for both Jacksonville proper and Safety Harbor! Today “Port Canaveral Landing” remains an important stopover for cruise ships docking at Jacksonville Bay while also providing convenient access to various shopping centers located nearby such as JCPenneyand Macy’s! Only after Hurricane Andrew hit in 1992 did safety Harbor begin developing its own government including police forces, fire departments, schools etc.; this development came about due to increasing concerns over electrical outages that plagued many small villages across southeast Florida during those days! Although some damage DID occur during Andrew such as power outages lasting several hours each day impacting entire neighborhoods certain infrastructure had already been put in place prior thereto like water systems capable of handling multiple disasters simultaneously without fail!
