At its height, the harbor handled up to three hundred ships per day and accommodated up to nineteen thousand passengers per day. In 1934, Mayor John Hynes purchased land at what is now Fourth Avenue and Meridian Street east of downtown from Zephyr Fruit Company for $1 million dollars to create what is today known as Harbourtown Development Corporation (HDC). Safety Harbor, Florida is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,988 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville–Aurora–Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by J.C. Heye and named for his family's home on Harbour Island off Jacksonville Beach, which he had purchased from a settler named Harbison. In 1912, Heye donated land to make Safety Harbor an incorporated town with a library and fire department. The first post office opened in 1911 and was renamed Harbor Heights after Heye's heirs sold the station and all its equipment to the town for $1,000. In 1925, Heye donated $5,000 to build an elementary school and 1927 added a high school (now Safety Harbor High School). In 1957 Safety Harbor approved annexation by neighboring Dahlonega because it had become overwhelmed with development within its own boundaries; both towns are now located within Lee County limits. Since annexation, Safety Harbor has seen explosive growth as the result of industry including logistics companies such as Wal-Mart and DBP WorldLogistics that have moved their operations into the area around Port self-storage docks on Harbour Island where they have created over 100 jobs since 2000 alone; also resulting in increased land values as businesses expand onto larger tracts of undeveloped land near shopping centers like Walmart Supercenter and IGA supermarket chains that have created new neighborhoods adjacent to these retailers providing access to fresh produce/meat/frozen food not found nearby until you drove or walked past them on your way home from work or daycare center—a rarity nowdays!
