Safety Harbor, Florida is a town located in Clay County, Florida. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Safety Harbor was James Purdy in 1853. In 1906, George Bogan opened the first post office in Safety Harbor. The town name came from the bay that separates it from Jacksonville. In 1967, Safety Harbor voters passed a resolution to change its name to Harbour Island because of its location on an island in Miami Bay and because of its resemblance to Harbour Beach on Cape Canaveral Peninsula in Florida (the capital city of Florida). In 1984, US Steel shut down their steel plant there and laid off most of their workers; many remaining employees live nearby now as people commute into Jacksonville for work or school. In 1990 Harbour Island became an official incorporated municipality with jurisdiction over all butques (islands) within its boundaries. The incorporation made Harbour Island one of only two townships within Clay County without any restrictions on growth or development beyond what is allowed by state law; other townships have been created through annexation by other municipalities since then such as Indian Rocks Beach and Belle Isle Springs.

Safety Harbor, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Safety Harbor was W.J. Hickey on December 21, 1903. He and his wife Clarissa built a cabin on a hillock above the harbor and named it "Hickey's Hill". Hickey brought in some fishing nets to sell and hired two men to help him harvest clams from the local clam beds during their first year of business. By 1905, Safety Harbor had its own post office and WILKINSON & CO., Lumber Merchants had opened up shop next door serving both townspeople and visitors alike with supplies for building construction or just enjoying the wonderful views from their establishment's veranda overlooking downtown Safety Harbor proper which included present-day City Hall annex as well as an ice cream parlor/Cleveland State Park now known as Harbour Towne Centre In 1907 Captain JAMES FERGUSON of Melbourne Beach started marketing his barbecued chicken dinners over the wireless radio transmitter he had taken down from atop Hickey's Hill so that people could hear him cooking your meal right there in their town while they ate it out on their porch or inside one of their many buildings located throughout town including 5 churches (St Bartholomew Catholic Church; First Baptist Church; Methodist Episcopal Church; Second Baptist Church; and Presbyterian EpiscopalChurch) along with several grocery stores (GEORGE'S Grocery Co.; PEARL STREET GAS STORE; SADDLEBACK GAS STORE) all located within walking distance of each other making safety one of those concerns that needed to be considered when planning communities such as this Captain Ferguson continued selling his meals until 1942 when he sold his business to JOHN MILFORD who moved it across I-4 off Airport Boulevard into what is now known as Comcast Place where he operated it until 1963 when MILFORD converted it into an apartment complex Notwithstanding this great success stories by early entrepreneurs like Captain Ferguson, Postmaster James Cushman decided to open up his own store in 1911 after being impressed by how successfully GEORGE'S Grocery Store was doing just outside of town One less worry for residents since then safe harbors prospered becoming an area rich in history having been home to several Confederate Generals during America's Civil War including General JEFFERSON DAVIS who made safety harbor his headquarters before fleeing south eastward after successful operations against General Robert E Price at Buena Vista Springs Arkansas In 1892 Major General WILLIAM TOWNSEND arrived here from Mobile Alabama commandeering a schooner belonging to Commodore JOHN MCGUIRE which became anchored off shore at Point Comfort giving rise to nickname "USS Landing" later renamed USS Tampa Bay during World War II due to American naval activity near point where troops land on various occasions
The town of Safety Harbor, Florida was founded in 1892 by the brothers Emmett and John Harrington. The town quickly became a popular tourist spot thanks to its beautiful white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and wide open spaces. In 1949, the state of Florida built a military base in Safety Harbor. This led to an increase in development around the base and the town started to decline. However, over the years Safety Harbor has managed to keep its nickname as "The Beach Town".
