Safety Harbor is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Canton, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by settlers from Georgia in 1827. Its original name was "Ft. Myers." In 1903, Safety Harbor became the site of one of the first air shows in the area when it served as a location for the World's Columbian Exposition. The exposition ended on October 20, 1903 and safety harbor lost its status as an Expo Site in 1978 when all land within its boundaries were annexed by neighboring St Petersburg. However, Safety Harbor has made many contributions to aviation including home to both Tampa International Airport and Plantation Airpark which serves as both commercial and military airport In May 1942 during World War II, Jughead Slocombe set off a bomb that destroyed much of downtown Safety Harbor before he was captured and turned over to the Japanese authorities. As a result of this bombing campaign against what they considered U.S forces operating inside their country (the so-called " Pearl Harbour Raids"), much fear began to circulate throughout Japan about such attacks emanating from America even after the war had ended On December 5th 1935 local newspaper columnist Floyd Bolen wrote an article entitled "A Warning From History" which warned residents living near power lines not to touch them because they might be electrocuted if someone did not have insurance or knew how to properly use a lightning rod On January 3rd 1938 two people were killed when their automobile collided with a truck while driving down Main Street in Safety Harbor; this incident is still considered one of Florida's most deadly vehicular accidents ever In 1945 General Leslie Groves took command of African American troops fighting in Europe under Operation Overlord which led directly into World War II The following year saw increased tensions between black Americans resident hereabouts and WWII veterans stationed elsewhere due largely to segregated housing policies put into effect by local officials following VE Day - this culminated with several high-profile instances where black Americans such asstatesman Howard Baker sought refuge herefrom angry white mobs . One example occurred on November 12th 1948 when Baker used his political clout to gain passage through Congress legislation allowing black soldiers serving out time overseas free food stamps while also providing for desegregation within military facilities across America . Arrests followed shortly thereafter . On December 11th 1948 white assailants attacked three men – James Ambler Jr., 24yr old Curtis Slatoni and 26 yr old Harold Smith – who were walking home from getting ice cream from Dunkin' Donuts located just east of town limits after dark outside store grounds .. Three days later similar attacks occurred upon another group of blacks - Reuben Cunningham 21yrs old & Darrell Green 14yrs old – hitchhiking westbound on Hwy 10 near US 90 junction.. These incidents brought widespread community concern prompting then-Mayor Harry Byrd IIIto call for city manager John Doe's resignation effective January 2nd 1949 .. safety harbor continued facing heightened public attention until fairly recent times with few major incidents taking placeduring these years On July 15th 1959 two brothers named Lamar & Leroy Hardin were shot dead while hunting deer at their property southeast of town limits; this event remains oneofFlorida's worst mass shootings
