Royal Palm Beach, Florida is a tourist town in the southern United States. It is located on the west coast of Palm Beach County and includes the communities of Royal Palm Beach proper, Jupiter, Boca Raton, and Deerfield Beach. The population was 827 at the 2010 census. The name "Royal Palm" comes from Spanish meaning "palm tree." The first recorded reference to Royal Palm Beach was in 1665 when Juan Ponce de León discovered it while exploring south America. In 1864 First U.S. Military Expedition against Cuba under General Andrew Johnson landed here with 1,500 Americans and seized two plantations including one known as Plantation Key which later became Royal Palm beach proper. On October 12th 1865 US Grant arrived at Fort Pierce with an army and took possession of Plantation Key which he renamed Fort Grant after himself and his generals successively during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief United States Forces in Cuba At its peak in 1901 there were over 50 businesses in Royal palm beach proper employing more than 500 people; today only a few remain – including Gables PCB Co., Oriental Trading Company, American Can Company and Floridian Coffee & Tea Corp.. By 1912 there were 137 residences built along Collins Avenue making it one of the most popular areas for housing in town In 1941 the post office closed due to lack of mail service so residents received their mail from Jacksonville through Harris Teeter until 1954 when they opened their own mail station across from City Hall . In 1951 construction began on what would become known as Princess Towers (later State Fairgrounds) which included a large shopping mall with 11 floors and 2 restaurants/bars/banquets halls on each wing extending into a open air courtyard . Today’s shopping mall is home to several high end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue , Neiman Marcus , Macy’s etc . Along Collins Avenue are several modestbut well kept homes dating back to early 20th century such as Dunphy House (now occupied by St Johns Flagstone Bed & Breakfast), Gable House (now occupied by Aveda), Goldsmith House (nowoccupied by Lululemon Athletica) .....and many others still extant testifying to how much this once vibrant community has changed but not lost its appeal
