Rockledge is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded on October 8, 1875 by J.M. Ball and Wm.H. Aiken as "New Rockledge". It was named for Major General George Armstrong Custer who died in 1876 during the Indian Wars in India and his bodyguard, Lieutenant Colonel John Murtagh Rockledge. The first post office opened in December 1875 and was called "New Rockledge". In 1901 the name changed to "Rockledge" after General Leonard Wood's brigade fought at Chickamauga Creek while stationed there that year; this event helped solidify local support for Wood's presidential campaign that year against incumbent Grover Cleveland (the Republican). In 1907 it became part of the newly created Monroe County; when it did so it had a population of 2,493 people. In 1911 Rockledge had a population of 3,014 people when prohibitionist candidate James Fenton won an election against Prohibitionist Arthur MacArthur; he also received most of the votes from within Rockledge itself although he only represented a small portion of its total population due to its rural location and lack of transportation options outside of Jacksonville proper. A tornado touched down on November 12th 1939 in Beech Grove Park just east of town killing one person and causing extensive damage which included damaging homes and businesses as well as creating serious destruction near US-1/SR-386 (now CR-1), which remain among Monroe County's worst natural disasters ever with estimated losses exceeding $100 million dollars ($ as of 2019)

The community was founded in 1907 by J.C. Ledyard and his family as a country estate on 1,000 acres (400 ha). In 1912, Rockledge became part of the newly formed Osceola County and remained so until its annexation into Sanford in 1959. After annexation it lost some of its rural character but has gradually regained it since then due to agricultural production and development of nearby Kissimmee Hills Resort Park which includes an amusement park, shopping mall, tennis complex, golf course and water park. The name "Rockledge" comes from two early settlers, Samuel Johnston and John Crouchberry Sr., who purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) of property east of present-day Rockledge from developer Jules Aiken for $4 per acre (0.24 ha). Johnston named the tract "Old Plantation" after his plantation near Savannah in Georgia where he had been born in 1781. The Ledyards erected a log cabin on the site on November 8, 1907 – three years after they arrived in Orange County from Virginia with their seven children and five grandchildren following their father’s pioneering stagecoach trip around Northeast Florida that summer [1]. They were among about 60 pioneers who first set foot upon what would become Osceola County when it was organized December 12th 1835 under Governor James Kenedy[2]. At that time only rural areas within Osceola County had licenses to cultivate cotton; these licenses were given to those who could prove they had land or own slaves along with other requisite qualifications including being able to build homes or furnish firewood for local families[3]. By 1910 there were over 50 residents living within 2 miles (3 km) of present-day Rockledge – most residing along Umatilla Road northwest of town limits[4], although several families resided further away on plantations southeast of town[5]. Services available at that time included groceries provisioned by local farmers via wagons headed down Umatilla Road each morning before return trips back up during evening hours[6]; transportation consisted primarily of horse-drawn coaches departing from downtown for various destinations northwest throughout the day[7]; mail service was provided by wagonloads brought down Umatilla Road each afternoon for delivery to residences inside and outside town Limits; Telephone service came about this time courtesy of William Stephenson [8] – also one year prior to incorporation when Stephenson leased 600 feet (183 m) side lot on Main Street between Third Avenue South & Fourth Avenue North from Simon Gage [9] . At Rockledge’s incorporation date November 8th 1907 thereileven residents already lived “outside”of town limits; however many more would move intotown over ensuing years as businesses flourished & infrastructure grew such as: N&W Railroad Depot built in 1909 at corner 3rd Ave South & 4th Ave North opposite today's Walmart - later renamed Piggly Wiggly restaurant - manufactured goods store built 1911 at corner 3rd Ave South & Fourth Ave North now known as Gulfstream gas station - First Baptist Church established 1914 - current day Applebees restaurant built 1966
