By 1870, there were over sixty small businesses operating within a one-mile radius of downtown Rockledge including twenty-seven grocery stores and thirteen dry goods stores; five saw mills; three brickyards; four breweries; two blacksmiths; one saddlery establishment; one hotel (the Park Hotel); two churches (African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and Christ Lutheran Church ); ten schools (grades Prekindergarten through Twelve); three banks - First National Bank, Citizens Trust Company, and State Bank - employed seventy-six people as bankers or clerks during that time frame In 1886 when Rockledge became an unincorporated municipality it had a population of just six people but quickly grew with twelve new businesses opening up within its borders within only fifteen years including five general stores plus two hotels/motels which increased its population to over fifty residents by 1912 During World War II many workers from nearby Jacksonville took up arms against fascism and joined forces with US military units stationed here such as Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force Station at surplus land east of town on Pinecrest Boulevard which would later become known as Jacksonville Municipal Airport A local hero during World War II was Dr. Harry Humes who served as Medical Advisor to Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe (HACE) during the war Rockledge also played host to numerous tournaments throughout various areas of Florida gatherings such as PGA Tour events held at JAX airport typically attracting some top golfers each year

The first European to sight and explore what would become Rockledge was Captains Noel and James Cook on their third voyage around Cape Horn in 1769 during the British Exploratory Expedition withCaptain John Hawkins as second in command. They named it after Sir George Rockliffe (1685-1735), a Tory MP who had been Secretary at War for Ireland from 1719 to 1725, then served as Governor of Stuart's Jamaica from 1727 to 1729 before becoming Viceroy of India from July 27, 1730 until his death on October 14, 1733. At that time it consisted of only a few hundred white settlers and was largely uninhabited due to its difficult location between Mobile Bay and Pensacola Bay on an exposed cape which made transportation difficult and also because there were no rivers or streams nearby which could provide water for mills or plantations. In 1836, Jacksonville businessman J.P. Morgan purchased land east of present day downtown Rockledge from Eustace Mullins Jr., founder of Gulf Coast Steamboats Company who had built one of the first steamboats west of Tampa Bay in 1835 using motive power from horses pulling a caravel called "Osprey". A year later he donated money towards building a public school in honor of his old friend Mullins' son – Revd Samuel Henson – who had died young while serving as pastor at St John's Episcopal Church near Tampa when age 26 years old less than three months after being ordained into ministry following service as an itinerant preacher across North America during the Great Awakening period In 1839 Revd Henson erected Kings Chapel (later known as First Presbyterian Church) within walking distance of current First Presbyterian Church which still stands today along With brick masonry Second Avenue south side now home to Park Place Apartments & Pub located directly across alley From north side now home Bicentennial Hall facing Foley Road home Of Orange County Courthouse In 1865 construction began on what would become Escambia Community College (ECC). The college opened its doors to students in September 1870 with classes starting at 9:00 am each weekday morning until Christmas Day 1966 when classes were suspended due to construction work related to US Route 80 bypassing Escambia County just east of town Limits then reopened operations under new name Gulf Coast State University In 1966 ECC became part of Pensacola State University system merger making it one campus with nine colleges and universities In 1984 ECC merged with Daytona State College becoming Daytona Technical Institute . That same year ECC lost all university buildings including its library & archives but regained them back when Pensacola State University System merged witth Florida Atlantic University creating FAU . Today ECC has 2 campuses located in Daytona Beach & Port Everglades Escambia Community College operated two schools: King's Chapel School (established 1865) & First Presbyterian School (established 1939). King's Chapel School closed permanently in 1971; First Presbyterian School closed permanently on December 6th 1979 due to financial difficulties caused by changes brought about by ESCAPE legislation passed by both housesof Congress reopening shortly thereafter under new name Gulf Coast Technical Institute without any loss or damage however libraries contents were lost including rare books dating back over 100 years Escambia Community College operated two schools: King's Chapel School (established 1865) & First Presbyterian School (founded 1939). Rockledge was founded in 1901 by two brothers, John and George Rockledge. The brothers were inspired to start the business after they saw their father build a small farm near their home. They gradually started expanding the business until they had a grocery store, bakery, and hotel in operation. In 1916, the Rockledge family sold the business to their brother-in-law, W. Clifford Howland. Howland renamed it "Howland's General Store". The store continued to grow until it became one of Florida's largest commercial businesses. In 1954, Howland sold the store to his son-in-law, Clarence Howland Jr., who renamed it "Howland's General Store II". The store continued to grow until it merged with another department store chain in 1984 and became part of JCPenney Corporation.
