In 1971, following annexation of nearby Plantation Beach by Rockledge, Stonington High School became home to both campuses of the University of Central Florida campus for students from surrounding counties (the current name for UCF's Stonington Campus). After years of growth and development within the borders of its own municipality - driven largely by new housing developments sprouting up around it - Rockledge incorporated as a city on November 3rd, 1984 via an act of the Florida Legislature under then-Governor Jeb Bush (). The incorporation resulted in many changes to its form: most notably the addition of an elected mayoralty with three-year terms rather than one-year terms; creation of a City Council with thirteen members instead of twelve; enactment into law provisions mandating that all local government funds be used only for "local purposes"; and designation as a master planned community - which gives it more control over itsinternal affairs than do traditional suburban municipalities such as Jacksonville or Fort Myers (). Today Rockledge remains economically vibrant thanks to its strong manufacturing base that includes auto parts and tires; natural gas production from oil well sites offshore nearshore; agricultural production including fruits and vegetables;and tourism based on beaches located within easy reach while also offering golf courses dating back to 1922 (. Rockledge, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The original Rockledge was a small community on the southern edge of what is now Dadeland Park. In the mid-19th century it developed into an important center for citrus production and commerce in the area; its white cotton plantations produced some of the most prestigious fabric in America during that time. In 1912, following annexation by Miami Beach, Rockledge became a city and was renamed after Arthur E. Rockledge, then governor of Florida and future U.S. Senator from Florida (1915-1921). The name change reflected Rockledge's reputation as one of South Floridians' most prosperous cities; at that time it had more than 25 banks and over 100 businesses including 50 hotels and 10 stores.[1] It also became home to many prominent citizens such as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who lived on Wandsworth Road near East 85th Street until her death in 1945,[2] actor Buddy Hackett who lived on Sunrise Boulevard[3][4] and journalist Walter Cronkite who moved to Coral Gables in 1948 after serving as bureau chief for WPBF-TV (now WTSP) in Tampa Bay.[5][6] The economy changed rapidly during World War II with many residents moving to service jobs in support of their country; however, there were no major military installations within or close to Rockledge when war began so few people knew about or participated in its hostilities. After the war ended Rockledge experienced rapid growth thanks to new development along Sunrise Boulevard which made it possible for many local businesses to continue thripping although much manufacturing stopped because wartime resources were diverted elsewhere due to inflationary pressures unique to post-war society: prices soared while materials remained plentiful but quality decreased making goods less durable and more expensive overall despite being made with higher skilled labor
