When the Rockledge Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1898, it had only one gun swivel. Rockledge is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Rockledge" has been derived from two Spanish words: roca meaning rock and leed meaning estate. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Rockledge were prospectors looking foruggets of gold in 1837. They named their community after Juan Pablo de la Vega y Costilla, a captain who led an expedition exploring the Everglades Peninsula in 1794-1795. By 1841, Rockledge had become a post office with three buildings and 100 residents. In 1868, it became an incorporated village with six buildings and 150 residents; by 1902 it had grown to sixty-six buildings and 1,600 residents. In 1907–1910 construction began on the Miami Beach Railway (MBR) which would connect Broward County with Miami Beach through Rockledge and then on to downtown Miami. The MBR was one of the earliest projects undertaken by Mayor Manuel López Menendez and his predecessor Edward Condon Jr., who served together from 1911 until 1923 when they were replaced by Carlos Márquez Rivera as Mayorrico Fajardo's administration reformer during what was called "the Red Scare". At that time working Class people living near modern day I-75 were greatly affected by fear of Communist infiltration into their community due to its proximity to South Florida - also known as "The Banana Belt". In early 1937 prior to its official opening on July 4th of that year, Rockledge's only store – located on Main Street – burned down due to arson charges brought against five local men including John Ritchie who later became mayor of Coral Gables following his election victory that year over incumbent Arturo Fraga Díaz Jr.. In 1941 upon returning from World War II service as an Air Force lieutenant colonel assigned training airfields in South Florida at Plantation Key Naval Air Station (now other than operational), Lieutenant Colonel Ritchie reopened the store under new ownership and renamed it Starlite Trading Company Incorporated; he donated all profits back into the community via special tax rates given to businesses within city limits rather than taxes levied statewide or countywide which helped spur economic development within city limits while maintaining social services available free of charge for citizens without middle class incomes or access thereto With gasoline rationing beginning nationally throughout much of 1942 due largely to opposition among business owners within city limits along with shortages caused by fuel production quotas set forth by General Motors Corporation (), Lieutenant Colonel Ritchie spearheaded efforts locally towards petitioning government officials for permission for open burning operations taking place daily adjacent property lines across I-75 between Breeze Hill Road eastward past Lake Worth Drive southward past Cutler Bay Boulevard eastward past New York Avenue continuing northward until approximately milepost 281 located just outside present day Miramar neighborhood boundaries; this ultimately resulted in authorization granted allowable daily burning operations totalizing approximately 2 acres per day commencing immediately adjacent property lines being used exclusively for trash collection thereby reducing dependence on state/national Fuel Supply Quantities quotas established earlier that year resulting in significant savings for taxpayers beholden thereto during WWII years . That same year saw establishment within city limits of first women’s association ever organized within any American municipality west coast region consisting solely female members elected annually from membership rosters compiled monthly from individual individual ladies collective membership dues paid) . By 1951 Census there were over 10,000 residents residing therein making it one of most populous towns west side region having surpassed Fort Lauderdale , FL . Development thereafter generally paralleled increase simultaneously occurring socioeconomically decent black & Hispanic populations expanding rapidly suburban growth spurt ensuing primarily along I-4 corridor adjoining Ft Myers Beach Blvd & Gulfstream Park Boulevard eventually reaching Myakka River Estates section today known simply as "Rockledge"

Rockledge is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Melbourne–Boca Raton–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on November 8, 1892 by brothers George and Harry Rockledge. The original name for the town was "Land O'Lakes". The Rockledge post office opened in 1893 and operated until 1907. In 1966, when Interstate 95 was built across Brevard County from Rockledge to I-95/US 1 in Ft Myers, much of what is now downtown Rockledge changed hands as development prices soared due to interstate construction jobs created by then-Governor Reubens according to historian Tom Koppelman: "The developer who gained control of most of central Brevard...saw his fortunes soar when US 1 (now US 95) was widened into a four-lane highway." As development continued eastward along US 1 from Melbourne overpasses near today's Millenia Center mall and University Place shopping center until just south of present day Uptown Park Avenue, downtown areas around Lake Worth Boulevard were rapidly gentrified into high-rise condominium complexes with expensive new names like Palm Drive Plaza and Waterfront Place—all developments that continue today as well as older commercial buildings being redeveloped into mixed use apartments or condos using modern architectural elements including glass curtain walls or LED light controls. Downtown businesses such as banks and dry goods stores closed up shop after Interstate 95 passed through while others saw an increase in car traffic because people could no longer get off I-95 at Exit 15A for Sanford which later became I-4 exit 3755 (today's SR 624). At this point many residents decided it would be more comfortable to stay put within walking distance of their homes rather than move out onto I-4 where they might have had trouble finding parking oraccess to essential services such as grocery store or hospital
