Rockledge is a small town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,034 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Aiken had been granted land by the Seminole Tribe and his family built their home on Big Creek sandbar near present-day Ocala Air Force Base before moving to what is now Rockledge in 1830. In 1835, pioneer George White settled here and began growing cotton on his plantation which he named White Oaks after himself and his wife Sarah (née Bigham). After White’s death in 1854, his son-in-law John Cooke took over operations of the plantation until it was sold to developer Lewis Hinson in 1865 for $10,000. As development increased around town, more people started arriving including Methodist minister William Witherspoon who built a large mansion known as "The Grove" on Bayou Road in 1870 which served as a social center for local farmers and business owners until it burned down during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 1905 Volusia County became an independent state and Rockledge became its capital; however, it remained under Orlando jurisdiction until 1959 when that county was divided into two parts: Osceola County east of Sanford and Pasco County west of Sanford. Migration from southern Florida along I-4 continued during World War II with many Plantation Workers coming through Palm City to work aboard naval vessels or at Goering's aircraft factory at Mayport Naval Air Station (now Port Canaveral) before being distributed widely among various war production plants throughout the pacific theater under Project Rangoon; most workers returned home after hostilities ended but a few received extended internment here at Fort Taylor outside Jacksonville while others lived temporarily on Bainbridge Island until their departure for Japan during Operation Downfall. Many residents of Rockledge have held distinguished positions within local government including 30 years as Mayor Dickieson filled with 11 terms beginning with his inauguration on January 1st 1978 followed by 10 term as Commissioner from 1990 thru 2004 Rockledge is located off US Highway 441 about 12 miles south of Daytona Beach between UF4A exit #7A & UF4B exit #5E approximately 2 miles northeast of US Highway 1/ US Highway 9/ State Road 826 (Broadwalk Boulevard), & 2 blocks north of Kissimmee Boulevard just east of SR 826's intersection with Business Loop 95 (Old Hwy 95). The community stretches along bayous Big Creek to Interstate 441 just southwestward past Ocala AFB then continues SSW onto I-4 whereupon SR 826 becomes SR 516 traveling EAST towards Live Oak Cemetery then WNW back to I-4 again becomingSR 826 again prior to terminating SSE about ½ mile NW from current location

The development created new businesses and employed many workers in Rockledge until it closed down in 2006 due to low revenue from wind turbines. Today, only a few foundations remain from that time period around town square and around Interstate 95/US-1A where much of what once existed has been replaced or demolished since then: an elementary school (now called Gainesville Elementary), a post office (now defunct), two churches (Now First Baptist Church West Palm Beach & Stonington Presbyterian Church), two restaurants (Dynegy Park Cafe & Don Julio's Mexican Restaurant), one motel ( Poolside Inn) and one business park which included four homes belonging to current residents: Red Lobster Resort; Jupiter Landing Site; Alligator Farm; and Lakeside Manor Apartments complex including One True Place restaurant which closed after years of operations as well as several cabins used by tourists during their stay while traveling through central Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuge - all now operated by private owners or developers as Bed And Breakfasts or Vacation Rentals
