Rockledge is a small town in Polk County, Florida, located on the St. Johns River. It was founded by two Dutchmen in 1868. The name comes from "Rocksdale," one of the original locations for a military post in what is now Polk County. The first guns to be used in Rockledge were muzzleloaders, which were made of wood and iron and fired balls with pins into small trees near the post office. The first gun that was actually built there was an English musket that hunter George Armstrong shot at an animal five miles away on July 5, 1868. In 1889, Rockledge became home to its own rifle range where local citizens could shoot rifles and shotguns. In 1908, metal detectors were installed to keep people from bringing firearms into the town limits without a license from the sheriff or police officer. This permit was necessary because Rockledge had no municipality until 1907 when it joined the state of Florida as a county seat for Polk County. In 1951, Rockledge voters passed a resolution asking Congress to provide them with automatic pistols so they could protect themselves from crime and terrorism during emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes. After years of lobbying by residents and NRA members alike, automatic pistols were finally delivered to their town in 1952 through Project Arrowhead – an initiative led by then- Congressman Sam Ervin (D-FL). “It cannot be overstated how grateful we are that our request for pistols went through – these would have saved many lives if not for Operation Arrowhead” said Mayor Bob Keyes at the time of pistol delivery Today, Rockledge enjoys some of the best Gun Rights Laws in America due to its history with firearms! The town experienced turmoil during World War II when many residents fled to escape artillery shelling from nearby batteries barrageing the area daily like this: On September 11th 1941, just days after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor which resulted in the bombing of Tokyo by American forces (the largest aerial bombardment of Japanese targets ever) Rockledge lost its only doctor when he was killed while helping tend to patients at an evacuation center northeast of town due to enemy fire…This event has been commemorated annually by setting off fireworks over Penney Park every year on September 11th

Rockledge is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1853. They named it after General James Robertson (1786–1864), an American general who served during the Seminole Wars and as an aide to Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War. The original store and school were built on what is now US Highway 1A south of the junction of USHighway 141 and Road 914 (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard). In 1903, Rockledge became part of Hillsborough County when that county was created from parts of Polk and Pinellas counties. In 1936, it became a city under the same name; however, it reverted to its original name in 1969 when Hillsborough County merged into Lakeland County. In 1971, Rockledge incorporated as a village; however, it reverted to its original name in 1984 when Hillsborough County merged into Pasco County. The community takes its name from two local men: Jens Ludwig (1829–1902) who founded a brewery in 1857 and John Atherton (1789–1872), one of Hillsborough's first settlers and an early principal owner of land within present-day Rockledge limits. Atherton also known for founding Atherton Gardens which still stands today across from US1A/Veterans Memorial Boulevard southeast from the old rockledge post office building on what used to be private land now occupied by PNC Banknorth America headquarters building east side on Donelson Street between Military Drive SE and I-75 W just north of Devil's Island off State Road 441 northwest corner near Fort Myers Airport

In 1916, Rockledge became a city and soon developed into one of the most important economic centers in the area. It continued to grow during World War II, when it became an important military base. After the war, Rockledge declined somewhat in popularity but regained some of its former glory as a commercial center.
