Rockledge is a small community located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on State Road 441, about 15 miles south of Tampa and 25 miles north of Orlando. The town was platted in 1907 by J.C. Frischmann and Fenton Saucier as part of a plan to create a " citrus center" in central Florida. It became an agricultural village with several thousand acres (1 million m²) of fruit orchards and sixty-five businesses when it was incorporated as a city in 1918. Rockledge's growth accelerated after World War II when the federal government created two military airfields here: Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Myers Army Base. The influx of military personnel made Rockledge one of the most heavily industrialized communities in Florida, with more than 200 companies manufacturing goods such as automobiles, electronics, plastics, rubber products and appliances. By the end of the decade, Rockledge had also become home to many new residents who had moved there during postwar boom times: college students from Gainesville and Jacksonville; migrant workers from Latin America; black Americans brought over by white families fleeing lynching; Ice Skaters from New York City; retirees from Palm Beach County's resorts

Rockledge is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. It is located on the shore of Pensacola Bay, about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Tampa and 15 miles (24 km) east of Jacksonville. The first settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1856 and named the community Pinellas after one of their ship's anchors. In 1865, General William Troup ordered all Seminole Indians to leave Florida for fear they would become hostile towards white people if left unchecked. A group of Rockledge residents banded together to help these Indians find new homes and continue living peaceably until 1830 when federal troops removed all Native Americans from Florida. In 1876, Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg burned down what was then known as Pinellas Landing on Pensacola Bayou to prevent American traders from trading with the Seminole Indians there. This event is considered to be the beginning of piney woods culture in SoutheastFlorida . After the war ended, many military veterans returned home and began settling this area which had been abandoned by most Floridians due to lack of available land or transportation options following Reconstruction years in mainland America. They started agriculture along Pensacola Bayou and developed an economy based largely on seafood production until around 1920 when air travel became popular throughout much of SoutheastFlorida so more people could come into contact with nature and its resources instead of relying upon farming methods that relied heavily upon irrigation water drawn from nearby springs

The first store there was built by Captain John C. Thomas. In the 1840s, several mills were constructed in the area around Rockledge for flour and cotton processing. In 1860,rockledge became a part of the Union Territory of Florida when that territory was created from parts of Alabama and Georgia. As part of Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many black men were brought to Rockledge to work on farms or as laborers. The town gradually developed into a center for African-American culture and commerce until it came under federal jurisdiction after World War II as part of the New South Ordinance compliance program.
