Rockledge is a small town in Florida. It is located about 25 miles east of Tampa and about 15 miles west of Jacksonville. The population was 1,471 at the 2000 census. The area that would become Rockledge was first settled by Indians in the late 17th century. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson decided to move the United States military base from Fort Brooke on the mainland to what is now Rockledge after years of negotiations with Seminole chiefs. Jackson named the community after Major-General James Robertson, who had played a major role in his victory over Native American forces at Horseshoe Bend in 1812. In 1892, J.P. Morgan founded Gulf Oil Company in Rockledge and soon began using part of the original village lot for its office and warehouses. The company quickly became one of Florida's most important businesses and left a lasting impression on both locals and visitors who came to see it operate its rigs, storage tanks, pipelines, refineries and more than 100 offices across eight states during its heyday. By 1951, Gulf had merged with Standard Oil Company to form ExxonMobil which continued expanding into new markets around the world until it merged with Mobil again in 2001 creating another giant oil company - BP - which still operates out of Rockledge today!

Rockledge is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,191 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Rockledge" comes from a sand dune on the edge of present day Rockledge Village and its surrounding area which wasonce used as an artillery range by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The village began as a small farming community started by brothers Amos and Nathan Perkins in 1871. In 1906, local lumber baron W. Halsey Pickering built his home on what is now east side of Main Street in Rockledge Village and renamed it Pickering Manor after himself and his wife Henrietta Pickering (1854-1937). One year later, he donated land to build a high school which would serve as the nucleus for what would become Polk County's first high school – Clearwater High School (now Clearwater Middle School). By 1930, Clearwater had grown so large that it needed its own high school; accordingly, Polk County established Clearwater Junior College to provide educational opportunities for students from nearby rural areas who could not attend public schools. In 1923, local farmer Samuel Moody donated land east of Main Street to create an additional football field for Clearwater High School; this field became known as Moody Stadium today. In 1930, local businessmen Harry Goode and Roy Coleman donated land west of Main Street to create another football field – Coleman Field (now known as Memorial Stadium). In 1938, local automobile dealer Clyde Dickson donated land north of Old Hwy 192 to house his dealership; this dealership became known as Dickson Motorsports Park today. In 1955, local doctor Jules Weisner donation land west of Main Street to create what is now called Weisner Clinic; this clinic became known as Weisner Hospital today. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, many veteran soldiers returned home and began anew lives in their towns across America - including many who settled in Polk County. Among these new settlers were veterans such as Gene Pershing II (US Army) who founded Pershing Heights Trophy Club Inc., one of the largest rifle ranges outside war zones; Harry Goode III (US Army) who founded Goode & Coleman Tire & Rubber Co.; Roy Coleman (US Marines) who founded Coleman Trucking Co.; Willis Ransom III (US Air Force) who founded Aviation Research Associates; Willis Ransom IV (US Navy submariner) who founded Naval Research Laboratory - all men whose families continued living in their respective towns until they died or moved away during or after the late 20th century waves of suburbanization that swept America throughout much of South Florida region
