Rockledge is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Rockledge" comes from a Native American word meaning "the place where the red man built his lodges." The town was founded in 1887 by J.J. Denton as a small trading post on the banks of the St Johns River near present-day Clearwater Bay. The post office date to 1889 and was renamed Rockledge in 1912 after Colonel John Fiske Stone, who had donated land for the town and helped finance its construction. At first, Rockledge consisted of only three homes and two stores; however, over time it grew into a thriving community with over 100 businesses and 719 residents when it incorporated as a city in 1959. In 1978, Rockledge became one of only two cities in Florida to receive full federal funding for environmental protection through their Comprehensive Environmental Response Plan (CERP). Today Rockledge remains an attractive destination for both civilians and tourists due to its numerous cultural attractions such as its festivals and art shows annually held throughout the year; its beautiful parks which offer stunning views of inland waterways; and its wild history which includes many battles fought during Seminole Wars, Creek Wars and World War II right next door to downtown!

In World War II, Rockledge was home to the U.S Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NASJax) which played a significant role in Allied fighter aviation during that conflict. NASJax also hosted other Navy stations throughout Florida including NAS Key West (NAKW), NAS Bryan (NASHB), and NAS Fort Pierce (NATP). After the war, NASJax was decommissioned in 1946 and it has been inactive ever since. Today, Rockledge is a popular tourist destination with its wide variety of attractions including several museums, beaches, golf courses, restaurants, and shopping hillsides full of beautiful homes dating back to early 20th century fishing villages like Nichols’s Landing or Jennings’s Hammock Inn properties
Rockledge was founded in 1892 by J.D. Rockefeller and his partners John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Andrew Carnegie as a small town on the north coast of Florida. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, especially phosphate rock that was used for fertilizer and other industrial purposes. In 1916, the Rockefeller brothers merged their businesses into the Standard Oil Company and Rockledge became part of the company's corporate headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. The town experienced significant growth during World War II when it became home to Naval Air Stationolland (later known as Jacksonville Intl Airport) and Naval Base Great Lakes (now Fort Myers Beach). The post-war years were less prosperous, with many factories closing down in the early 1960s and 1970s as oil prices plummeted. However, recent redevelopment has led to renewed prosperity for Rockledge which is now home to a number of high- tech companies as well as an active cultural scene.
