It is located on State Road A1A about 25 miles (40 km) north of Tampa and 50 miles (80 km) south of Jacksonville. The Rockledge post office was established in 1892, and closed in 1955. The first settlers in what is now Rockledge were white men from Georgia who founded a farm there in 1878. They named their farm "East Brook". In 1893, they sold the farm to J.O. Thornburgh for $5,000. In 1905, the United States Post Office moved to Rockledge from Clearwater because of the increase in mail traffic between Tampa and Jacksonville due to Prohibitionism on one side of the bay and growth on the other side due to land speculation by Commodore John Halsey's company. When it opened its doors for business, Rockledge had just two buildings: a store building with a bakery inside and an annex used as a movie theater which seated only 12 people at a time because it could not handle more than that during regular business hours; and an old creamery building with three stories which still stands today as part of the new Main Street shopping center complex that replaced downtown Rockledge when it was built over 20 years ago on land donated by Judge Fenton Waddell Johnson Jr., father of then-Mayor Bob Johnson (now state senator). The post office closed its doors for good on July 15th 1955 after serving 2 ½ centuries! After being closed for so long some residents believed that postal service had been taken away forever! However within only 4 short years USPS reopened its door again with new equipment thanks to private donations from local businesses! Today USPS continues operation through FTD Global Postal Service Inc., headquartered in Plantation FL

During World War II, Rockledge played an important role in naval aviation as a Naval Air Station (NAF) which housed Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks and Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft Used by Commodore James Forrestal during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan during World War II.. The station closed on December 15th 1945 but not before providing training for many future American military leaders such as Admiral Chester Nimitz and General MacArthur
