His slave Sally Custis helped name the town after her home country – Italy – where she had moved with her parents from Georgia some time earlier that year while he served in Congress during the 1830s. In 1892, Julius Caesar Epstein purchased land near present-day Riviera Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue which became known as Epstein Park after him and his wife Lily Epstein donated $5,000 towards improvements thereabouts including a beachfront resort (the first such establishment in Florida) that would later be renamed Riviera Beach Resort & Casino after them both died suddenly young in 1957 at age 70 years old while vacationing there with their two children! Riviera Beach is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,292 at the 2010 census. It sits on the shore of Palm Beach County and is bounded to the south by Boca Raton; to the east by Jupiter; to the north by West Palm Beach; and to the west by Fort Lauderdale. The town began as an agricultural community in 1915 and grew rapidly during World War II as a result of military base construction nearby. Afterward, Riviera Beach lost much of its commercial significance but has regained some importance since 2000 as a popular tourist destination due to its wide array of shopping opportunities, especially along palm-lined streets lined with beachfront homes. The history of Riviera Beach can be traced back to 1915 when developer Harry Fenton developed land near what is now Riviera Boulevard and Umatilla Road. At that time there were only two houses in Riviera Beach: one belonging to Fenton himself and one rented from Mrs. John Mifflin. In 1916, Fenton built his first home on what is now State Road 441A—the current site of First Unitarian Church—and within two years he had constructed three more homes on what are today State Road 441B (which forms part of Interstate 95) and State Road 455 (which runs parallel to Umatilla Boulevard). By 1918, Fenton had created a small village consisting of about 30 residents who cultivated crops such as corn, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, apples and grapes in their homes orchards while also enjoying fishing tournaments held at local lakeside coves each winter. In 1939–40 VFW Post #8802 was founded in Riviera Beach by veteran soldiers stationed at Fort Lauderdale Naval Station after World War II ended. That same year saw the opening of Palm Desert Playground which became one of South Florida’s main amusements for children following passage of state law allowing businesses open late without having previous night permits filed with local police departments. In 1940–41 Looff Brothers Sporting Goods opened up shop on Boardwalk Drive serving locals who bought items such as ammunition and cigarettes from outside suppliers before selling them back into town during weekday hours using boardwalk sidewalks adjacent to Looff’s store bank account until it closed in 1978 following a fire that destroyed most of downtown Fort Lauderdale’s stockroom supply depot less than four months after its opening In 1945 then- mayor William Dutton made Riviera Beach one of five towns served by his newly created City Services Department which replaced Miami Herald District No 2 staff shortages caused by World War II service members still living IN Miami proper & occupying formerly unoccupied Herald building across Overtown from Miami public library . On December 15th 1945 Mayor Dutton officially dedicated new city services building located at 201 N University Ave NW which housed new Police Dept including patrol cars &intelligence function . Within weeks all old Herald employees had been relocated inside & HSD bureau moved into former USO barracks next door where it remains today
