In 1892 Punta Gorda was annexed by Tampa with a population of 1582 people; it reverted back to its original name two years later when incorporation into Hillsborough County failed following a referendum vote countered by nearby Port Charlotte (then part of Hillsborough). The post office opened at Punta Gorda on November 12th, 1886; it continued operation until discontinued on October 3rd 1940 due to low mail volume. In 1915–16 changes were made to municipal government with a mayor-council formulating which led eventually to incorporation as a city under charter granted February 2nd 1916 by then Mayor Noble Wills III with a population estimated at 1,200 people including 675 Puerto Ricans living aboard Ulysses S Grant’s yacht “Battleship Nevada” moored offloading supplies at San Pedro Harbor while she layatened off Fort Myers ahead of her voyage home from Havana Bay—the first such visit by American warships since slavery ended there more than two centuries earlier! Mayor Wills served until his death on May 7th 1923 after being elected unopposed amid allegations that he had accepted bribes from timber interests seeking annexation into Tampa proper! His successor Harry Jablonski quickly enacted programs designed promote growth within city boundaries despite predictions that such initiatives would result in increased crime rates attributable thereto: elevated taxes caused business owners and others who could not afford them exodus from city limits; advances were also made toward public education but little progress was made thereafter until 1966 when City Manager Artemas Rodriguez instituted change necessary for zoning code revisions resulting in reopening/adoption of Comprehensive Plan providing for annexing neighboring Clearwater Township! In 1980 hurricane damage caused extensive flooding within city limits necessitating relocation/addition/removal of significant portions(including most (~90%)of downtown)of newly constructed civic center & library before they reopened following Hurricane Ivan! During this time period budget shortfalls resulted in elimination or curtailing many projects while new construction began only after voters approved spending increases authorized thereby averting bankruptcy & enabling continuation Of all these endeavors without interruption or decline! Finally becoming an officially incorporated city effective September 1st 1984!, citizens adoptedName Change Resolution No. 984-C finalizing official spellingchangesfrom "Puntagorda"to"PensacolaBeach."
