The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were the Dutch in 1606, who named it Bona Fortuna after their ship, Batavia. Punta Gorda was founded by Spanish colonists in the early 17th century as a small island near Tampa, Florida. The colony grew quickly and in 1692, it became part of the new Spanish province of Cuba. In 1763, during the Seven Years' War, British forces landed on Punta Gorda and attempted to capture it from Spain. The battle took place off the coast of Punta Gorda and ended with a victory for Britain. Aftermath of the war saw an increase in British ships sailing through the area looking for targets to attack and this led to increased smuggling activity on Punta Gorda. This made it a popular spot for pirates who could charter vessels and sail undetected into Cuban waters. In 1815, American settlers began arriving on Punta Gorda and soon after started developing its landward side. By 1825, there were over 60 residents living on Punta Gorda proper with additional population growth occurring along the shoreline including within fishing villages located at Isla Margarita and Isla Verde. In 1827-28, construction began on what is now known as Fort Myers Beach State Park which was named in honor of Commodore James Cook who had visited Punta Gorda two years earlier while exploring Florida's southeastern coastline. By 1830 most of present day Flagler County had been organized with just a handful of farms scattered around central Tallahassee Valley unincorporated territory that still includes much of today's county seat – Palm Harbor – as well as parts of downtown Daytona Beach.
