The first permanent residents on the island were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1796. The British took over control of the island in 1815 and renamed it Fort Caroline. At that time, there was only one small plantation on Punta Gorda, which belonged to Captain Charles Findlay. After Findlay's death in 1830, his widow became owner of the plantation and continued to run it until her death in 1872. In 1881, a group of American businessmen acquired the dependency from its Spanish owners and founded a sugar plantation on Punta Gorda with plans to develop it into a large commercial center. They called their new venture "Punta Gorda Sugar Company" and constructed a number of buildings including an adobe courthouse, cotton gin, distillery, blacksmith shop and other infrastructure necessary for running a sugar plantation. The company struggled during the early years of World War I but managed to survive through 1919 when hostilities ended. However, during World War II they lost all their assets except for some rights to produce cane syrup on Punta Gorda Island which they still own today. After World War II ended there was much speculation about what would happen to Punta Gorda Sugar Company since no one wanted it anymore but nothing came of it and most of its assets reverted back to its original owners who sold them all out within a few years. Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of the mouth of the St. John's River and north-northwest of Jacksonville. The population was 2,681 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot on Punta Gorda Island was José de la Garza in 1795. In 1821 Juan Pablo Fernández y Costilla landed there with his squadron from Spain to purchase sugar from Indians and build a fleet for smuggling purposes; he named it Mina de las Islas Filipinas after Manila in Philippines. In 1824 American Commodore James Kapp sailed into Fernandina Sound and sighted land about three miles long by one mile wide backed by coral reefs; he called it "Island Number One." It was part of Spanish Mobile Bay until 1836 when it became part of US commonwealth of Florida under US sovereignty. On January 10, 1840 US Captain William Byrd anchored near Punta Gorda while treasure seekers were searching for Spanish treasure off Fort Caroline which they had discovered earlier that year during their exploration of Tampa bay area; they found 9 chests weighing over 4 tons each inside a cedar swamp near present day Belle Isle Boulevard and Gandy Bridge Road in downtown Punta Gorda.
