Punta Gorda was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1665. The first European to visit the islands was Francisco Vásquez de Ayala, who named them Punta Gorda because of the large rocks at the island's center. In 1821, Punta Gorda became a U.S. protectorate under Spain and was renamed La Vega de la Esperanza. After the American Civil War, it reverted back to its original name in 1865 when it became part of Florida. The population of Punta Gorda peaked at 5,000 in 1920 but has since declined due to lack of jobs and infrastructure development on the island.
