Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located on the southern coast of the U.S. state of Florida. The population was 3,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of Manatee County and is located adjacent to Sarasota County. The area now known as Punta Gorda was originally an uninhabited atoll located about midway between Tampa and Orlando on the southeast coast of Cuba. In 1892, Captain James Webb (1857-1934) and his wife, Isabelle (1863-1946), purchased land from Isaac Sanchez for $1,000. They built a fishing village on what is now known as Fort Myers Beach Boulevard and opened it to tourists in November 1892. By 1923, however, the Webers had closed up their beachside resort and sold most of their property to other investors for development into what would become Punta Gorda’s current boomtown status today! In 1928, Punta Gorda voters passed a resolution urging President Coolidge to annex Key Biscayne Island so that it could be included within Miami County! After much discussion and deliberation – which saw many signatories from both rural areas along the peninsula as well as downtown – President Coolidge announced that Key Biscayne would become part of Miami County on December 1st 1929! This event marked an important milestone in local history as it introduced mainland America’s first major hurricane landfall in recorded history!
Punta Gorda, Florida was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s. The area now known as Punta Gorda was first inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1821, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and named it after Commodore James E. Cushman of USS Constitution fame. The city of Punta Gorda began to grow up around the fortifications built to protect the town from Seminole Indians and pirates who frequented the area at that time. In 1898, Punta Gorda became part of Cuba during the Spanish-American War after a U.S.-supported Cuban expedition landed there and successfully defended the island against Spanish forces. After Cuba's collapse, Americans took over control of Punta Gorda and developed it into an important harbor for trade with Latin America and Europe. The city enjoyed a period of prosperity until World War II when rationing forced many businesses to close down or move out of state for lack of available resources. After World War II, much development occurred in Punta Gorda as new residents moved in and businesses grew again thanks to post-war reconstruction efforts led by Governor George Wickersham (1948-1954). Despite this growth, blight spread throughout parts of town due to uncontrolled overcrowding and decay in some older areas; this led to increased calls for action from developers interested in redeveloping downtown areas into modern neighborhoods with larger homes and more commercial space than had been seen before. In response to these calls, Mayor Harry Bogan (1959-1972) initiated plans for a revitalization project which called for increasing density along arterial streets in order to create greater pedestrian opportunities as well as creating open public spaces near key business districts that would be accessible from all quarters of the city center. By 1972, however, redevelopment efforts on downtown had stalled due to budget constraints; instead, most attention turned towards renovating longtime low-rise housing stock southeast of downtown into denser neighborhoods characterized by larger home sizes and more visible commercial offerings than before.
