Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Pasco County, Florida, United States. It lies on the mainland of Pasco Island, between the towns of Punta Gorda and Dunedin. The community was founded by Spaniards in 1824 as Isla de la Cruz. In 1861 it became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Its name was changed to Punta Gorda after General John F. Kennedy's landing at this island on July 14, 1962. In 1916 a smallpox outbreak killed more than 60 people in Punta Gorda; however, this event did not cause any permanent damage to the town or its economy because smallpox can be cured with antibiotics if caught early enough. The first post office opened in 1919 and remained open until 1951; it was named for Captain Pedro Montoya Valdés who served as Postmaster from 1915-1917 and 1918-1920. The first store opened on Main Street in 1920 and continued operation until it closed in 1984. During World War II there were three military airfields within a few miles of Punta Gorda: one near Fort Myers (now Clearwater Air Force Base), one near Jacksonville (now Jacksonsville Naval Air Station), and one just south of downtown (now Stormalong Beach). All three airstrips were used extensively by fighter pilots during World War II; they also produced munitions manufacturing plants which manufactured planes such as bombers and fighters for both Allied and Axis powers. One notable product made at these plants was plutonium which played a major role in creating atomic weapons during the Cold War era.. Today there are only traces of those old airfields remaining - all but Clearwater AFB have been demolished or converted into housing or other uses since the end of World War II.. On December 2nd 1914 two men from British Honduras came ashore on Isla de la Cruz off shore from their steamship "Queen Victoria" looking for new land to settle after leaving their home country five months earlier when that country had become a part of Mexico under President Porfirio Diaz.. At that time everyone living on Isla de la Cruz spoke English so communication between Spanish speaking residents and newcomers could be conducted easily without fear that words would be misinterpreted or misunderstood Captain Manuel Oviedo Gomez set up his own farmstead about mile long by half mile wide some . . . east side creek ran through town you could see sandbars running out into Gulf about 12 feet high we had no electricity either then or now nothing does grow hereabouts except some termites that go up trees ..... food mostly consisted of Capt Manuel’s catch he got every day fresh water supply coming down stream he built himself a “gallon” well he milked his cows once a day I bought butter from him sometimes eggs too I cooked what we ate with butter & salt pork ..... life expectancy back then wasn’t very good so many died young like my brother do today ............. our womenfolk mostly worked outside doing chores while men hunted everyday they gathered shellfish etc.... fishing season usually started around May 1st when waves began to form big enough so we could get close enough to touch bottom ....[In 1912] There were no hospitals then nor now....................................................................................... By 1926 over 100 people lived here.................2 years later

In 1912–13, Hutchins unsuccessfully tried to build a resort on Punta Gorda which would have included a hotel, casino and other amenities for tourists. However, he continued to own and manage the island until his death in 1944. During World War II Lieutenant Commander Franklin D Roosevelt called at Punta Gorda twice during his naval occupation of Key West before returning home to Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 aboard USS Mount Vernon (APD-4). On October 16th 1942 USAAF Squadron Five bombed and damaged two Marine barracks ashore at Grosse Pointe aux Lacs about 6 miles east of Punta Gorda Island when their Catalina flying boat Lt #2c Flying Boat No 826 made an unauthorized landing with four Marines attached from VMF(N) 527 near Cape Canaveral airfield enroute from Stennis AFB.. One Marine died as a result; all six men were taken prisoner without resistance or return fire when they were captured by Japanese forces that same day while orbiting over Key West..
