When pulled tight against the person’s body, thisgun sling created an effective projectile-firing weapon! Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 9,536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Punta Gorda was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1819, Captain John Smith discovered and named this island after St. George's Cross on the north coast of England. The first European to settle here was José Rivera in 1842. The name "Punta Gorda" (meaning "Island of Fort Worth") was given to it by General James Kenedy during his Expedition against Seminole Indians in 1861. In 1868, Punta Gorda became an incorporated municipality with a post office and A&P grocery store as its first municipal buildings. By 1902, there were twelve homes built on Main Street and six businesses had opened downtown since its incorporation: two banks, two hotels, one bakery/canned goods store and four mercantile stores including three grocers/commercially important groceries chains: Jarden's Food Co., Gulf & Wabash Grocery Co., and Wegmans Bros./Foley's Grocery Incorporated (and later known as Safeway). The growth of agriculture led to the opening of large fields for citrus production beginning in 1926; this led to heavy development of infrastructure necessary for support including a water system which became full service in 1933; electrical grid expanding from small household lights into full power by 1941; runway being lengthened from 3,000 ft to 4,500 ft beginning in 1942; airfields being built at Key Biscayne Airport just south of town limits starting in 1944; harbor becoming developed with warehouses and wharves as well as several residences (beginning with Mrs. Edwin Capps' house on Harbor Drive) During World War II many civilians made their way here for work on coastal defense gunships orumping supplies into TCP Harbor which guarded vital shipping lanes off Florida’s coastlines while also providing an escape route for Allied POWs who were being held captive at Camp Phoenix outside Naples In 1951 Punta Gorda annexed neighboring Eleuthera Island making it twin municipally owned islands along with Marco Island which had been part of Eleuthera until 1901 when it too separated from its larger neighbor Ports open locally: US Coast Guard Station Key West - 1949 Terminal Marlin Freeport - 1950-present day NAS Jacksonville - 1959 Naval Air Facility Jacksonville - 1959 US sugar refinery Drusilla Refinery In 1957 electric lighting began within municipallyowned buildings Introduction of new school district boundaries 1st public high school established 1912 [Gulf High School] In 1963 statehood granted followed by annexation by Tampa Bay Area

Punta Gorda, Florida is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico and has been inhabited for centuries. In 1513 Hernando Cortés sailed up the coast of Punta Gorda seeking to find new land to explore and claimed the island for Spain. The first European settlers arrived in 1821 when Capt. John J. Fenton chartered vessels called "The Beagle" and "The Dolphin" to explore the gulf region. On January 7, 1824, Fenton landed his ships on a reef at what is now known as Constitution Point#1 on Punta Gorda, claiming it as Spanish territory. The area quickly became a stopover for whaling expeditions and later became an agricultural center with sugar cane plantations being developed around 1840-1850. By 1865, Port Royal had become the largest slave market in North America and by 1880-1890, Punta Gorda was completely dependent on fishing industry for its economy. However, during World War II construction began on Naval Air Station Key West which would eventually lead to gradual elimination of the slave trade from the islands' economy through Operation Crossroads. With no major commercial activity taking place until after 1984 when cruise ship arrivals began increasing significantly, Punta Gorda slowly regained some lost economic importance over time becoming an important tourist destination again in recent years
Punta Gorda is a small island in the Florida Keys, located about 12 miles east of Key West. The island was first inhabited by Arawak people and later became part of Spanish Florida. Punta Gorda was purchased by the United States in 1898 as part of the Treaty of Paris following World War I. The U.S. military put up a Fort Moultrie on the island to help protect it from potential pirate raids during that time. In 1934, Punta Gorda became an unincorporated community within Stonington Parish and remained so until 1959 when it became an independent municipality under the jurisdiction of Key West.
