Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community located on the island of Punta Gorda, in the U.S. state of Florida. It lies at latitude 29°41'N and longitude 81°57'W, about 8 miles (13 km) east of the mainland and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Jacksonville. The community was founded by Pedro de Menem in 1768 as a landing point for Spanish settlers seeking to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Mexico City. In 1821 it became part of St. Augustine,Florida and remained so until 1959 when it became part of Jacksonville. The first European sighting of Punta Gorda was made by Portuguese sailor João Rodrigues da Cunha in 1511 while he was sailing southward along the coast of Cuba. He named it San Salvador after Saint Saviour (Latin: Satorius), an earlier Christian missionary who had visited that region some years earlier. A natural harbor appeared on Punta Gorda around 1700 which may have been due to its sheltered location within a cape or headland overlooking the ocean. The first permanent European settlement occurred in 1768 when Spanish colonists landed at Punta Gorda under Captains Manuel Nieto and Francisco de la Cueva with their families following a voyage from Havana via Cape Haitien to Tampa Bay and then upriver to St Augustine, Florida.. Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico within the panhandle region of Florida. The population was 5,847 at the 2010 census. Punta Gorda is one of two villages in Doña Ana County, and it is the only incorporated municipality in Doña Ana County. The first European to visit Punta Gorda was Capt. Juan de la Fonseca in 1586 aboard his ship Santiago de Cuba. Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Punta Gorda Island beginning in 1795 and founded San José de Escondido on Isla Santa Catalina (Island Catalina) off shore from Punta Gorda. In 1827, after footloose Mexican settlers had driven out most English and American occupants of Key Biscayne Peninsula, Spain ceded control of Punta Gorda Island to US military commander James Kenedy as part as part of Treaty #2 following Alvarado's Invasion of Mexico in 1828. Punta Gorda, Florida was founded by Spanish settlers in the early 17th century. The community's first name, San Francisco de la Vega, was chosen in honor of Spain's founding father, Francisco Xavier Vázquez. It served as a trading post and military base for Spanish forces against Native American resistance during the early months of Florida's colonization. In 1693, the town was renamed Punta Gorda after Commodore John Ponce de León discovered it while exploring Florida for Spain. With its strategic location on the northern coast ofFlorida and its abundant resources, Punta Gorda quickly became a center of trade and commerce in what would become known as the "Gold Coast." The town soon prospered thanks to its natural resources and favorable climate. By 1821, Punta Gorda had reached its peak as an important commercial center with a population of over 1,000 people. However, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Punta Gorda came under attack from Ulysses S. Grant's army during his unsuccessful attempt to conquer Mexico City. The resulting battle destroyed much of the town and left many dead or wounded. Despite this setback, however, Punta Gorda continued to thrive until 1868 when it finally ceded control to Jacksonville Beach following a series of land titles dispute between two families that controlled both townships -the Alvarezs and Blancos-. In 1902, Jacksonville Beach annexed part of Punta Gorda Township which had long been desired by developers because of its rich phosphate deposits located just outside the town limits. As part of this process, some old buildings in downtownPunta Gorda were torn down and replaced with new structures designed specifically for phosphate production purposes -an event which is still celebrated annually on Father's Day inPunta Gorda).
