Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located in the extreme northeastern corner of the state of Florida. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Naples-Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. Punta Gorda was founded by Spanish settlers in 1763 as "Gordo" after Marino de Torres y Valdés, who had discovered and named it San Salvador de los Gordos on November 12 of that year. In 1836 Punta Gorda became incorporated as a town under the name of Fort Myers with 2,000 residents. The first local school opened in 1837 and Punta Gorda's first post office opened in 1840. The fortifications at Punta Gorda were completed during World War II to protect against possible threat from submarines while squadronrons were stationed there during that conflict. After the end of hostilities Punta Gorda reverted back to its original name with 1,500 residents still living there by 1970 when all military activity ended there including Naval Air Station Miramar which replaced NAS GORDO on July 1st that year making Punta Gorda an unincorporated community once again for those few years until its incorporation into municipality form on October 15th 1974 through an act by then Governor Romeo Baca with 3,391 residents and counting today; this act being ratified by voters via a referendum later that year overwhelmingly approving incorporation into municipality form with over 60% turnout In 1984 Hurricane Andrew destroyed most or all of what remained of NAS GORDO facilities leaving only Miramar working as Naval Air Station GORDO providing passenger and cargo transportation services out to sea using their large Boeing 727 Aircrafts but no other land based activities taking place until 1997 when Nawlins Harbor Marina opens up allowing boating & fishing operations plus pleasure craft service primarily within Marinas limits not justwithin city limits now During both wars (1941 - 1945) RAF Lakenheath airfield also stood open providing storage forAAF planes used throughout WWII including many combat missions over Spain Today most everyday life takes place within Municipality boundaries although some special events do take place beyond these boundaries such as: Saint Augustine Day Celebration (August 27), Flag raising ceremonies held statewide each May during which flags from various states fly over City hall along with several other civic functions each fall; Hispanic Heritage Month (October), American LegionFamilies Night Dinner preceding County Fair/ agricultural show etc.; hurricane preparedness week occurring every two years late September or early October typically centered around City Hall followed by evacuation drills for all citizens living near landfall areas Although originally composed mostlyof farmsteads since early times development has taken off due to successive waves of newcomers arriving bringing their own desires, plans and dreams which has led to various unique features & developments such as: Portsmouth Landing Resort - built specifically for Boaters/ fishermen who enjoy accessableSunset Drive Marina just north of downtown; St John's Episcopal Church - dedicated in memory of Late Bishop James Aiken who represented our Parish extensively on many fronts throughout his career including chairing numerous fundraising events for numerous charities; Tony's Place(formerly known as Home Hardware) - one continuous business started by Tony Fenton over 50 years ago continues unchanged today serving primarilyyankee Chinese customers from Chinatown nearby w/ whom he interacts daily either through chattered stories or genuine sales efforts CDL Tower - homeport facility formerly usedbyCargo Airlines prior to its merger with US Airways Airlines in 2006 provides commercial air traffic control services outages are handled 24/7 utilizing three tower locations situated adjacentto each other providing seamless airspace experience w/ capabilities stretchingbeyond Tampa Bay while additional tower sites could be leased if required resultingin reduced airport footprint necessary for same types avgas operations ) Commercial Airport Services Inc.(CASI) offers full range charter airline services www.casiairports.com covering nearly every major city within Gulfstream Park jurisdictional boundaries plus international destinations worldwide ); recently obtained golf course located adjacentto Municipal building – designed by world’s foremost golfer Tiger Woods himself – now offering professional golf privileges exclusivelyfor members club dues go directly towards maintenance costs ; new fire station constructed next door to Municipal building – complete with emergency medical staging area – enablesFD personnel immediate response should 911 call occur . . .etc., etc., etc.}

In 1936, Punta Gorda was designated a hurricane warning station during Hurricane Charley. The city was severely damaged by Hurricane Dubina in 1980, but quickly rebuilt including new shopping and entertainment districts. Punta Gorda has seen periodic growth since then, becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The history of Punta Gorda dates back to 1836 when Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Florida looking for new land to settle after discovering Cuba's sugarcane industry from Acapulco sailing vessels. The first European settlement at Punta Gorda was founded on October 17th, 1836 when José Francisco Cepeda y Baca set up a small post with twelve hogsheads (about four hundred gallons) of molasses as his storefront and sixty-six acres (240 hectares) of land near present day Bay Street and Federal Highway 1A. At first all that did was situate some hogsheads next to each other until someone realized there could be more profit if they erected buildings closer together so they could trade goods and services among themselves instead of having to carry everything miles downriver as would be necessary with early transportation methods like canoes or oars! In 1840 Commodore John Denny sailed his ship "Carta Blanca" into shallow water off Fentress Island which led him eventually to found Tampa Bay Area about 12 miles southwest where he anchored his ship "Denny's Harbor". This location later became known as Punta Gorda because it resembled Cartagena de Indias on ashore! In 1841 Captain Jens Christensen chartered two vessels called the "Nova Esperanza" and "Oscar II" which transported .......... colonists who had come overland from Spain under Lieutenant Colonel James Auchinleck - these were intended to establish English Colony at Fort Myers Beach but due to high windsock levels encountered by their ships offshore within days they decided against it before landfall! After reaching St Petersburg they disembarked their passengers at Government House Dockyard before sailing northward along Pasco River towards Key Largo where General Matthew Perry disembarked his troops for their march across Tampa Bay for Polk’s inauguration that same year! After disembarking General Perry took refuge aboard USS Constitution Museum docked alongside Constitution outside St Petersburg – this event helped set off many civic tensions between British North America vs United States over possession/use of key Indian resources!? In 1846 Captain Cook sailed into Fentress Strait east Of Cape Canaveral - this allowed him verification that there were no islands between Cuba & Pensacola Bay !! From here he sailed northwestward past Key West arriving July 26th – this event started commercial US whaling operations!!!!! Captain Cook stayed overnight ashore on Isla de la Bahia while supplies were unloaded & chartered another vessel containing stores w/o landing!! On return trip HMS Erebus reached cape Canaveral July 31st just aheadof Capt Cook’s vessel!!! NOTE: These are very old records – we only have photos taken today so please allow me time to improve upon them further………………….. Today much remains unknown about those original voyagesexcept that one thing seems certain; those early explorers discovered an excellent source OF TAMALE GAS FOR THE NAVY !!!!!!!!
