In 1836, Englishman Thomas Bowen renamed it Fort Bowyer following his purchase of the island from Mexico for £2 0s 4d ($4 0s 8d). In 1898, during World War II, U.S military forces landed at Punta Gorda as part of Operation Husky with the hope of liberating Cuba from Spanish rule. As part of that campaign, large numbers of people died as a result of combat and disease including many Americans who had set foot on Cuban soil for the first time. After liberation came peace and prosperity for Punta Gorda which saw an increase in tourism over ensuing years; however much remains unexamined about its past due to its relatively low profile among tourists compared to other locations such as Key West or Havana
Punta Gorda, Florida history can be traced back to 1786 when Captain John Smith discovered the island. The first European to visit Punta Gorda was Juan Manuel de Ayala who named it Santa Margarita after his patron saint. For many years, Punta Gorda was used as a whaling station and is still home to a number of whales. In 1821, Daniel Webster visited the island and recommended that it be annexed by the United States. On July 5th, 1824, Congress passed an act annexing Punta Gorda into the US. As part of this process, American settlers began arriving on Punta Gorda and soon built a small town called Saint John's which they renamed Punta Gorda in honor of their new countrymen. The town would grow and prosper until World War II destroyed most of its infrastructure. During the war, many civilians were killed or injured when German submarines sunk ships off the coast of St Johns County causing extensive damage to both townships and businesses. Since then, there has been little development on either side of the strait other than occasional visits from military vessels which cause some minor damage but generally do not appreciably affect either community economically or physically
