Punta Gorda, Florida is a tiny island located in the Gulf of Mexico. It's only about 1/4 mile wide and 3/8 mile long. The island is home to just over 100 people and it's also the smallest of the five Virgin Islands. Punta Gorda was first sighted by Spanish explorers in 1513 when they were on their way to Cuba. They called it San Salvador de Punta Gorda. In 1821, American Commodore James Cook discovered Punta Gorda while on his surveying expedition during the Napoleonic Wars. He named it after General José Vicente Páez de la Vega y Córdova, who had led an expedition to find a passage from Africa to America in 1786-87. The first permanent human settlement on Punta Gorda was made in 1835 by Englishmen under Captain John Steedman. They built a small fortification known as Fort Steedman on the northeast coast of the island. The fort served as a garrison for local traders and pirates who terrorized other islands in the gulf during this time period. In 1861, American Captain Wm Halsey took possession of Punta Gorda from Captain Steedman and began felling trees for building materials for his new navyyard at Key West, Florida which he named Battery Key West after himself and Rear Admiral John Farragut (1796-1868). In 1898, World War I caused many refugees to arrive on Punta Gorda seeking asylum due to fear that Germany would invade America if war broke out abroad. Many Puerto Rican citizens volunteered into US military units fighting in Europe but many returned home before America declared war on Germany in April 1917. As a result of this influx of refugees onto Punta Gorda, some saw little opportunity or chance for personal growth since most everyone shared similar hardships living aboard warships all year long with few opportunities for ashore exploration or escape should things go wrong aboard ship during wartime conditions ashore….although there were some exceptions such as Commander Manuel Alvarez Rivera (1899-1948), probably one of WWI’s more accomplished naval officers and author who masterminded much reconstruction work following WWII repairs at La Isabelita Naval Air Station – now part of Manatee County Marine Park - after an airfield failed due to Hurricane Irma damage two years earlier….many residents chose instead not return either because they lacked housing or food resources available ashore; life simply wasn’t worth it….only recent arrivals like 56-year old retired electrician Carmelo Gomez have found welcome here since 2017 when volunteer groups moved inland from adjacent Charlotte Amalie Island…..total population today: 100

The first European to visit Punta Gorda was José Bautista de Anza, who sighted the island in 1794 while exploring the area during his expeditions along the Mexican coast. In 1819, Captain John Brown charted part of what is now Punta Gorda as Heceta Reef and named it after his ship, Heceta. The town grew rapidly during World War II because of its strategic location at the mouth of Hatch Bayou and its importance as a naval base. After the war, Punta Gorda declined due to a lack of population growth and development. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, most residents were subsistence farmers who raised chickens, pigs, horses, turkeys and cattle. However, since 2000 many families have moved into newer homes in search of better economic opportunities. The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were José Bautista de Anza (1794), Captain John Brown (1819), Commodore James Fenton (1838-41) and Drury King (1845). These individuals explored Heceta Reef which is now known as Punta Gorda Island in 1819 and named it after their ship Heceta which had just completed an exploratory trip from California through Tampa Bay. At that time there were no settlements on this part of Cuba so when these sailors discovered this uninhabited island they thought it must be very beautiful! They also noted that there was a good place to build Fort San Juan de la Cruz on this newly discovered island if they could find someone willing to donate land for it! Unfortunately not much happened until 1840 when Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez Martinez arrived with his expedition searching for new routes across America's Isthmus Of Panama! When he discovered what became known as "Hatch bayou" he decided to make some land here instead of building another fort at Pasco!! This site would later become one of Punta Gorda's main ports providing access to water supplies throughout southern Tampa Bay as well as being used by American forces during World War II for bombing raids against Japanese targets onthe mainland US!!! Most residents today are descendants of those original Spanish colonists who settled here in 1795-1800 including many celebrities such as Fidel Castro who was born here in 1926!!!!!
