In 1898, during World War I, U.S forces attacked Cuba's capital Havana and captured most of Havana Province including Punta Gorda. With that action came military occupation by the U.S., which continued until 1959 when Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba and ended that occupation with his announcing "the return to socialism". Prior to 1959 there were no restrictions on Cuban citizens traveling outside of Havana Province (except for travel within Havana Province). Consequently many Cubans moved to Puntagorda during those years as well as some Americans who had fled Cuba during its political instability; these people formed what is known locally as "Dirty 30" or "El Gringo 30". Since 1959 there has been significant population growth in Punta Gorda due largely to immigration from both inside and outside of Cuba; however much economic activity continues ashore because it is one of only two places in all of Cuban Florida wherePointe Marcelinas Resort & Casino remains open year-round despite being closed atypically during winter months due to poor weather conditions inside (outside especially). Punta Gorda, Florida is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico. The island was first settled by the Arawak people and became part of the Spanish empire after they conquered it in 1513. After Spain lost its power over Cuba in 1692, Punta Gorda fell under British rule until 1821 when it was acquired by the United States as part of Annexation of Florida. The island remained a US territory until 1959, when it became an independent country known as Puerto Rico. The name Punta Gorda comes from two Spanish words meaning "headland" or "prominence." The headland at which Punta Gorda is located was named La Isla de la Gloria (the Island of Glory). In 1795, Captain James Cook visited the area and named it Juan Fernandez because he thought that it looked like Mount Washington in New England. The first permanent settler on Punta Gorda was Manuel Rodrigues who arrived in 1797. He built a small fort on the island and started to cultivate land next to his fort. In 1800, Francisco Vásquez de Torres y Arellano discovered oil reserves on Punta Gorda and began planning to exploit them. However, due to piracy problems along the Gulf Coast during this time period, no production occurred for many years. In 1821, Commodore John Fenton sailed intobound from Pensacola with four ships carrying provisions for Fort Pickens at Key West and captured La Isabelita (Island Number 2) off Punta Gorda while under tow from Havana Bay on 10 February 1821 with HMS “Caledonian” following close behind him . On 8 March 1821 Captain Fenton gave orders for alligator fishing off La Isabelita Shoals so that USS “Cushing” could also be used for this purpose; however within 5 hours “Cushing” had been disabled by fire from one of Torres y Arellano's boats and all six men aboard were drowned including Commander Fenton . This event helped spur development around Key West for both private individuals and Government bureaucracy as vessels larger than life such as HMS Resolution were now available to capture treasure seekers operating outside US waters without fear of retribution or loss of property

Punta Gorda become a popular gathering place for Americans during the Seminole Wars and later served as a military post during the American Revolution.
