Punta Gorda was hit hard by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when wind speeds reached 125 mph (195 km/h). A $25 million rebuilding project followed which restored much of its infrastructure including new roads, schools, hospitals and businesses. Today, Punta Gorda is a thriving community with a rich cultural heritage that includes art galleries and music festivals throughout the year as well as tourism opportunities such as visiting nearby Boca Raton or Miami Beach
