The fortifications were constructed between 1869 and 1870 during Reconstruction following America's Civil War to help protect this region from Confederate attack while allowing for growing sugar cane production inland During World War II (1942–1945), various naval dockyards were built around or near Port StLucie; these include NAS Jacksonville (later renamed Naval Air Station Patuxent River) on Live Oak Key west of town; USS Baytown (CVE-66) just south ofport; USS Ponce (LPH-3C) off Sandy Hook Light House west of town; USS Wasp (SSN 703) moored offshore at Pier 1B right near where Lincoln Road crosses it; USS Cowpensogyny(APD‐2C), now part of MARTA Rail's Gold Coast Line at Brownsville Railway Terminal northwest of town - all within easy reach by car or water taxi from downtown Miami or Ft lauderdale .
