The first settlers in Port St. Lucie were Englishmen who came overland from England in 1763. They named their town after the French port of La Rochelle, which was then part of Spain. The Englishmen also built a fort on what is today known as State Road 30A. In 1814, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and renamed it for President James K. Polk. In 1824, an Act of Congress authorized the construction of a wharf on present day State Road 2B to import goods into and export goods out of Florida. This wharf soon became one of the most important transportation hubs in Florida because it allowed for easy shipment of goods by boat or train to markets all over North America. Port St. Lucie's growth continued during the 19th century with waves of immigrants coming to work in the local mills and mines until World War II when restrictions were placed on immigration due to wartime shortages.
