In 1892, the first post office was opened in Port St. Lucie. The town was named afterLucille de la Mothe de Grasse, a Frenchwoman who purchased land in the area. The first store in town was built on County Road A and later moved to its current location on State Road 6. In 1923, port st lucie became a city and the City Hall building was erected on Court Street. In 1961, the city annexed part of Fort Pierce which made it an independent city once again. By 1985, over 200 businesses were located inPort St Lucie with an average of 350 employees per business. In 1990, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of the downtown district and many buildings including the City Hall left for destruction but managed to survive as a heritage building until 2005 when it too succumbed to Hurricanes Ivan and Manuel. Today, there are very few buildings remaining from this time period and most of what remains is evidence of how quickly these industries were brought down by natural disasters
