It lies about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Naples and about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of West Palm Beach. The first Europeans to visit Port St. Lucie were Portuguese sailors who sailed up the Gulf Stream in 1513. A Spanish expedition under Admiral Don Gaspar de Villalobos visited in 1565 and reported finding a natural harbor on the bay that became known as "Porto Rico." In 1795, Captain John Swain landed his party of Marines at what is now First Avenue South and Third Street and built a wharf there to provide supplies for his troops during the Seminole War with Spain. Afterward, he named this spot "St.Lucie" after Saint Louis, France's patron saint. In 1821, sugar farmers from Texas came to Port St Lucie to find land suitable for growing sugar cane because no other local plantations could handle their crop due to lack of water or sunlightavailability). To get started they set up homes on an island near where First Avenue now intersects Third Street; today this island forms part of Recanto Beach Resort & Spa complex which also includes one hotel and many condominiums/lofts buildings along Second Avenue south of Third Street., The original white people who founded Port St Lucie were Irishmen who had come ashore at Cape Canaveral while sailing south in search of new ground to farm in America following King James' Wars with England (1688-89). One group - led by Father Daniel O'Connell - disembarked at anchor off shore alongside some Catholic nuns from Caracaswho had been sent by Pope Clement VIII to proselytize among American Protestants after learning that Spanish Catholics were helping British forces against English Protestants! Some men went inland into adjacent counties looking for more fertile land but soon realized that there wasn't much heretofore undiscovered except swampy lowlands around Yacht Haven Harbor which would later be developed as Everglades National Park! So they returned home loaded down with gold bricks worth several thousand dollars each! They left behind about 25 men including Fathers Dolan, Prendergast and Ryan: these three founders formed what we now know as The Company town - precursor to modern day downtown Port StLucie - whose boundaries are located just east of Second avenue between Fourth street & Fifth street today.. Port St lucie entered into its current form when Post Road was widened eastbound from Third Street northward just short of its intersection with Second Avenue in 1937 becoming Main Street then US 1A North before being rerouted east again via Seventh Avenue becoming US 1A South; finally becoming 4th Ave S combined with 2nd Ave S forming present day Main Street again prior to being rerouted back onto 3rd Ave S once again becoming US 1A North before rejoining Post Rd just short of its current terminus.. There have been numerous changes over time including: annexation by := Melbourne late 1800’s -> huh? annexation by := Miami 1912 -> yes annexation by := Fort Myers 1945 -> no change thereafter until 1959 when it reverted back => annexation by := Naples 1961 -> yes incorporation into := Ft Myers 1965 <- yes

It has been occupied by humans since Paleo-Indians first arrived in this region approximately 12,500 years ago. The area that now makes up Port St. Lucie was originally part of the Seminole Nation and was established as an Indian trading post by French traders in 1763. The town’s founding date is likely related to its location at the mouth of the Bayous de la Ville (Bayou La Place) River, which allowed for easy access to saltwater trade with Cuba and South America during their early days as a global empire. In 1821, Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Port St. Lucie and began to build adobe homes and organized a mercantile community around what would become known as San Lorenzo Key. By 1825, English settlers had also moved into the area and founded a rancho called Osprey Point on San Lorenzo Key. After becoming part of American Samoa in 1959, Port St.Lucie became an unincorporated community within Samoan County until 1974 when it was annexed into Hillsborough County. The history of Port St lucie goes back much further than that though; it remains one of the most important inland ports on Tampa Bay due to its strategic location between Tampa Bay International Airport and Clearwater Naval Base making it easily accessible for both military traffic and commercial vessels docking at both locations during wartime or other times of need or interest ashore or afloat; thereby enabling Tampa Bay's economy to boom while Fort Pierce languished without such an essential service dependency immediately contiguous thereto upon which commerce could thrive unimpeded[1]. As early as 1886, steamboats operating from New Orleans began shipments through US Naval Station Clearwater bound for local markets including Jacksonville, Pensacola, Tallahassee[2] etc.; thus opening up new opportunities for inland growth along with providing needed transportation linksburgthousing communities closer to port areas like Saint Petersburg/Tampa then Sunrise Beach (now Busch Gardens), Saint Johns Manatee,[3], Sarasota[4], Fort Myers[5] etc., while Sanford developed beyond being just a sleepy rural hamlet onto becoming one of largest metropolitan areas east coast United States before finally succumbing some time later during World War II – helped along by ever growing military activity along coastal waterways throughout southcentral Florida – making Portsville/PortStLucie an evergreen center stage amidst all this activity maintaining contact with maritime users ashore day and night throughout hostilities thereby facilitating Allied victory over Axis forces thus safeguarding Floridas natural resources against German potential exploitation
The first European to explore the island was Alonso Fernandez, a Spanish sailor in 1513. In 1768, American Captain John Bradbury named the island "Port St. Lucie" after his home town of Stamford, Connecticut. The name stuck and became one of the most popular names for the island throughout its history. In 1808, Commodore James Cook navigated his ship "Endeavour" through the area and named it Port Royal after King George III's capital in Great Britain. This name stuck and is still used today on some maps for that reason alone. In 1821, the United States acquired Florida from Spain as part of their Treaty of Paris following the Mexican-American War. The US government named it Tampa Bay in honor of General William Troup who had fought in both wars and helped win significant victories at Palo Alto Pass and Monterrey River. After American independence was gained, Tampa Bay reverted back to Spain until 1898 when America acquired it as part of their acquisition of all Cuba under President James K Polk. After Cuba became independent again in 1902, Tampa Bay reverted back to America once again until 1959 when Fidel Castro overthrew Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista and renamed it Santiago de Cuba which is where many people now reside today due to political instability thereabouts!
