In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved U.S. troops westward from Tennessee to Occupy Florida and established Fort Harrison as a military post on what is now known as South Beach Boulevard in Port St. Lucie. The fort served as a base for rifle and artillery training during the Seminole Wars and also acted as a supply depot for American forces stationed in Florida during the Mexican-American War. After the war, Fort Harrison was abandoned and eventually became a dumping ground for military equipment and supplies used by Confederate forces during Reconstruction before becoming an open air market on Commercial Street in 1893. After World War II,Port St Lucie experienced growth due to its role as an industrial center with production of shipbuilding, plastics, meatpacking, paper products, automobiles and other items coming through the city's ports including those located at Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Jacksonville (St Augustine). However, many jobs left town after those industries closed down or changed types of production while others such as nursing homes continued to grow rapidly despite facing competition from larger cities throughout Florida starting around this time frame. In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place within downtown Port StLucie with mixed results resulting in increased property values but also increased traffic congestion on busy streets which affects quality of life for many residents not just those occupying expensive properties near downtown areas today
