Port St. Lucie is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 22,395 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Port St. Lucie" comes from the mouth of the river that flows through it and Portuguese for "safe haven." The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1795 with Captain Pedro Menendez's expedition to explore this area now known as SouthFlorida and found a rich bottomland suitable for farming and trading with Africa and Europe. They named their new settlement Porto Rico after their native island in the Caribbean Sea where they had been living fleetingly since 1494 when Christopher Columbus discovered America east of Cuba. In 1824, two brothers - John Dennison and Jameson Dennison - bought an interest in what is now called Indian Key on Biscayne Bayou from José Avila y Castilla, then governor of Cuba for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest on any future profits generated by exploitation of its resources. This allowed them to establish themselves permanently in this important commercial center between Havana and Miami Beach on land that had been unused for centuries before them because it was part of Spanish Fort (nowFort Lauderdale). In 1840 they married Maria Antonia Bobadilla de la Rosa y Crespo; they were the first white couple to live together in what is today Port StLucie proper as well as Broward County proper (then Palm Beach) during that era which spanned just over 100 years! After refueling at Fernandina Island he set sail northeastward via Biscayne Bay until he reached Providencia Roads about 30 miles southwest of Havana harbor looking for Manuel Fraga who had headlong attacked American Squadron near Guantanamo Bay Onboard USS Constitution Commander Edward Preble sighted Fraga's ship La Bahia sailing northwestward about five miles distant He ordered Porter to pursue but soon realized that La Bahia could outrun him so he stopped pursuit fearing collisions If he pursued further he would have run into friendly Cuban vessels He reported his findings back to Flag officer commanding US Naval Forces Operating In Cuba Richard Byrd USN commander According to historian William Latham: Porter’s premature loss occasioned great regret throughout naval service; within hours after his report return[to] Commodore Fenton “the squadron [was] dispersed” according to one account while another related that “our vessels lay scattered along every coast line without leave or assistance from us….We did nothing but retire upon our own steamers” (ibid., pgs 448-449).
