In 1861, Commodore John Cudahy sold Port StLucie to Captain Harry Haines for $2,000 cash and 5% interest in his shipping companychanting under the name “Coral Gables Bay Company” Captain Haines used this port to supply goods from Cuba during American civil war with supplies reaching General Ulysses S Grant while he fought onshore at Guantanamo Bay In 1865 Captain Haines sold his company again using $10,000 he had received from President Abraham Lincoln as part of Reconstruction following America’s Civil War Captain Harry Haines only operated this port for two years before being forced out by Spanish forces during an attempt by Admiral Isidor Quadros to retake Havana In 1871 Captain Harry Haines founded another shipping company called The Gulf steam Navigation Company with Captains George Witherspoon and Arsenault Jourdain under their command The company traded between Key West and Tampa through primarily English ports until 1898 when it became associated with Spanish American War veteran Manuel Diaz who renamed it La Marina Española (Spanish Harbor) Ltd . After World War I captain Diaz sold shipyards along Atlantic Boulevard in downtown Port St lucie back into private hands perpetuating Spanish American War nostalgia In 1922 Captain Harry Haine Jr.'s widow established The James Ewing Foundation which provides scholarships for students studying history at US colleges or universities After years of operating without incident La Marina Española (Spanish Harbor) Ltd., later renamedthe James Ewing Foundation changed its focus once more becoming involved in charitable work such as giving backpacks filled with books to schoolchildren inneedlepointing out historical inaccuracies found therein
