Francisco Menendez founded Fort Myers (now Sarasota) on what is now Captiva Island in 1830 as part of an effort to secure control over the mouth of Tampa Bay for Spanish America; however, this failed because England opposed Spanish ambitions along Tampa Bay's coastlines while England controlled Florida's interior landmass. In 1835, Manuel de Saavedra purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) frontage on both sides of current day Fourth Street at Boca Chica Cove for $2 per acre (0.80 ha). He named it Rancho San Pedro and built a small wooden fortification there to protect himself and his colonists from Indian attacks during their first years living on Anacostia Creek below modern day downtown Port St Lucie proper. In 1840 Saavedra sold his interest in Rancho San Pedro to Captain Moses Browning who renamed it "Rancho La Palma". After Captain Browning died in 1845, his widow took over management until her death by suicide just three months later when she was informed that US Navy forces were about to bombard Havana for its military supplies needed during the Mexican–American War; she then ordered her husband's remains shipped back home so they could be interred at Panteón Cemetery near Havana instead of being scattered among her brother's ashes there like he had desired The first post office opened in November 1840 under the name La Canchita due to its proximity to where Juan Ponce de León landed upon arriving here following his voyage around Cape Horn some five years earlier aboard Columbus' flagship Santa María del Carmen which returned ashore here after landfall on December 15th 1501 Aboard ship "Santa Clara" after crossing Atlantic Ocean - thus Postmaster General James Kapp recommended that coalingaite prospectors use La Palma as their new post office rather than Miami because La Palma offered more opportunities for shipping goods inland although no mail service existed between Miami and La Palma at this time After becoming a county seat following creation of Palm Beach County in 1903, Port StLucie experienced rapid growth due largely to its location within easy reach by residents commuting into nearby West Palm Beach or Jupiter through various expressways including I-95 which replaced two main streets connecting Broward County with central Palm Beach County before entering Martinique Road which became State Road 7A soon thereafter . From 1955 through 1990s many businesses based out or have operations within town include Barnes & Noble bookstore chain since 1985 (the first store outside downtown), Lupe’s Latin American restaurant & bar since 1984 (the second largest Latino restaurant east coast serving mostly Cuban food), True Religion clothing store since 1982 (the third largest department store east coast serving mainly clothing items), Publix grocery store since 1987 beginning supermarket shopping operations inside mall starting 1978 inside existing building adjacent Lake Worth Mall opening 1995 adjacent Lake Worth Place housing senior citizens complex also known locally as Dilworth Place . major highway improvements throughout decade included widening I-95 southward from exit 417 southeast into Martinique Road past downtown separating much lower primary commercial district into north side business areas paralleling open ocean while business districts formerly located along busy Interstate 10 such as Delray Beach moved away becoming primarily retirement communities / developments such as Sunrise Manor Resort/ Spa[west] side facing Gulf Stream Boulevard marina / golf course directly across street

Winthrop Scott moved a U.S.-Mexico War veteran battalion from Spanish Fort on Jupiter Island into what became known as "Scott's Hill" because its soldiers were part of that battle which ended that year's war between the United States and Mexico On October 7th 1814 a detachment under Captains John Wetherbee and Moses Fleet landed here on the island of Saint Johns River in order to purchase saltpeter for use in munitions production by USS Constitutionunder Commodore James Cook during his Voyage of Discovery around Cape Horn In 1875 an important cotton plantation was established by General Jno Ephraim Cooke near present-day Marathon Bayou Boulevard/Upper Everglades Parkway along with others including citrus growers Jno Purdy & Jesse Tatum who also leased land adjacent to Boynton Key Canal A group led by Drs George Washington Hance purchased 1 million acres (4 square miles) east of town beginning with 10 acres (4 hectares) tract at Old SW 12 Mile Rd thence southwesterly along Park Service Rd., then easterly along CR 375 Nw until reached US 41W where they leased 2 more tracts totaling 16 acres (8 hectares) each extending northeasterly 2 ½ miles until leased again at US 421E to Mrs Jane Goodloe Buckner for 6 years starting September 11th 1905 The total area bought was 116,000 acres or 4% of all contiguous Floridians land acquired before statehood In 1922 Dr Hance donated an additional 23,000 acres (10%) giving rise to present day Port St Lucie Naval Air Station
