In 1814, a group of Englishmen named Capron founded an estate on what is now called Plantation Key. This land had been passed down by their ancestors and became one of the most important estates in the region. Over time, other families moved into this area and started various businesses including sugar plantations, fishing villages, and banana farms. At some point during the 19th century,Port St. Lucie began to develop into a busy commercial center with many factories and warehouses located along what is now State Road 1A. Port St. Lucie, Florida is a city located on the Florida Keys in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Pensacola, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Port St. Lucie" comes from two different places: one is near where the town now stands and another was founded by Portuguese traders in 1513 as an anchorage for their ships coming to Cuba from Mexico City. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto came through this area in 1539 and named it La Juana de la Cuna (the island of Juana). In 1810, US Commodore William Bartram built USS Constitution at Fort Myers Beach to serve as a training ship for American naval officers during the Seminole Wars against Native Americans. In 1821 Congress changed US Naval rules and renamed these waters "The keys of Port St Lucie". In 1907 Port St Lucie had a population of only 529 people; by 1910 it had grown to over 27,000 people due to its close proximity to Miami and its role as an embarkation and disembarkation point for shipping arriving from abroad via the Panama Canal. During World War II much activity took place at Fort Myers Beach because it was home to severalmajor naval bases including those belonging to both Allied forces and Axis powers during World War II - among them were HMS Repulse (1941) and USS Enterprise (1945). The adjacent land became known as "Fort Myers Beach Army Airfield". The first Europeans to visit Port St. Lucie were Spanish traders who set up a trading post there in 1513 and 1514. The area that now includes Port St. Lucie was first settled by Native American people as early as 1820 when Captain James Fenton landed with his fleet on what is now known as Big Island to trade goods with the Seminole Indians. In 1825 Fenton's son Colonel George Fenton donated land to create Fort Myers which served as the first permanent European settlement in present-day Port St. Lucie when it was founded on December 10th, 1830 by US Marines Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Baker and First Lieutenant John Pembroke Castleman under command of Major General David Dennison.. During World War II, many residents worked on naval ships moored at Miami Harbor; many others were drafted into service during the war and never returned home after hostilities ended.. Many residents also helped rebuild Jacksonville after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of that city in 1992.. As a result of its large Naval Shipbuilding program during World War II and later through other businesses such as Crystal Palace Pizza Inc., Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Coca Cola Refreshments Inc., Carnival Cruise Lines Inc., Boca Raton Hospitality Corporation and CoralGardner Tire & Rubber Company among others,Port Saint Lucie has become one of Americas most vibrant communities anchored by world-class manufacturing facilities dating back to at least 1917 including Chrysler Corporation's new global plant started construction in 1954 – still going strong today! With more than 350 companies headquartered here over 150 have moved their operations out into surrounding counties creating an even more dense concentration of businesses across multiple economic sectors - jobs galore! Many locals refer to this community simply as “the Ports” because you can find everything from department stores like Sears/Kohl's/JCPenney/Saks Fifth Avenue all the way down to small shops/cafes etc right along US 41A!
