The first Europeans to explore the area were Spanish traders and explorers in 1513, who named it La isla de Santa Lucía. In 1836, the US government bought 1,500 acres of land at what is now Port St. Lucie from a group of Dutch entrepreneurs for $2 million. The town was founded on December 2, 1836 by Colonel Augustus Kelley as an outpost on the then-new Florida Trail. On January 14, 1840, Fort George Harrison was built at present-day Port St. Lucie to protect east coast shipping against pirates. The fort served as a base of operations for the First Seminole War (1844-1846), during which time it became known as "the Gibraltar of the South." On November 11, 1861, when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia,Port St. Lucie became part of Union America and remained so until 1865 when it reverted back to Confederate control after the surrender of all Southern armies except for those loyal to Jefferson Davis. In 1904 local businessmen pooled their money and purchased 851 acres (309 hectares) along Long Beach Boulevard from John Dromgoole for $1 million dollars; this would become known as Port StLucie's Main Street gridiron development because most of what is now town center was developed around that intersection between 1901 and 1915).
