By 1880, Port St. Lucie had become an important commercial center for citrus production on South Florida's central coast due to its location between two navigable rivers: the Miami and Manatee Rivers system made it easy for ships to navigate through channels linking both bodies of water; as well as its access to salt water from the Coral Gables canal system." After World War II ended,Port St.Lucie grew rapidly thanks in part to waves of new arrivals: Puerto Ricans (many of whom settled around downtown), Koreans (mostly refugees from North Korea), Mexicans (especially those skilled in agriculture), Germans (of whom there were many after World War II because so many people had fled Nazi Germany), Portuguese people brought over by thousands of American soldiers during their occupation (most notably Celso Rodrigues da Silva who helped found Pompano Beach ), Italians (a large group arrived after Naples seceded from Italy), Greeks (large numbers came during World War II because they were needed on board U-boats that took refugees into English waters) and other international groups looking for opportunity or better lives in America during one of its most dramatic postwar decades."

After World War II ended, local businesses grew rapidly during what has been called "the golden age" of Port St Lucie development; however, since then growth has slowed while prices have risen relative to wages throughout most of America. Since 2000, there has been growing concern about global warming which has led some people in town to pursue environmental initiatives such as reducing energy consumption or investing in renewable energy sources such as solar power or wind turbines
