The first permanent European settler in the area was Nicholas de Montresor, who landed on St. Lucie Island in 1672. The first white inhabitants of Port St. Lucie were the French and they arrived in the early 1800s. In 1844, a group of Englishmen named Horseshoe Jacks moved from Jacksonville to Port St. Lucie and began to operate a whaling station there. They also developed a small trade in salt and other goods with Indians on the island. In 1902, the Florida Railroad came to Port St. Lucie and started carrying passengers and freight between Jacksonville and Fort Pierce,Florida. By 1912,the town had a population of around 1,500 people but it only grew more popular asandise shops opened up along Main Street which became known as "The Strip." During World War II,Port St. Lucie played an important role as an airfield for both USAAF fighter planes flying over Florida Atlantic Coast territory during the war effort and for military storage during peacetime until it was decommissioned in 1945. In 1971,Port StLucie experienced its biggest demographic growth when it became home to Palm Beach County's largest open-air shopping mall - The Waterfront Place - which replaced the previous single-story brick storefronts at nearby Clearwater Harbor Shopping Center which had been built by local businessmen John Pecora Sr., Harry Wexler Jr., Robert Eckerling and others in 1957 while they were all still members of Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce
